Vodafone’s already got a reputation for having inexpensive wireless data, but this deal makes it even cheaper, especially as it includes either a USB Modem ($24.50) or Wi-Fi Hotspot ($39.50). Simply entering ‘HALFOFF’ when purchasing either a USB Modem or Wi-Fi Hotspot will, not shockingly, halve the asking price. Both come with 5GB of included data with a 30-day expiry; while Vodafone’s network hasn’t been the shiniest in recent months, that’s still a good whack of temporary use data if you needed it. Telstra’s launching its ’4G’ LTE service today, and that means, amongst a blitz of high-speed technology, there’s also a blitz of publicity. As we noted last week, Telstra’s flying Rebecca Black out for publicity purposes — and it turns out it’s for 4G. Why, Telstra, why? I’ve been enjoying LTE so far… up until now. [Telstra]
Amaysim’s existing 1GB data bundles for $9.90 are already pretty good value for mobile broadband, but you can go through 1GB quickly if you’re tethering or downloading a lot of content. Amaysim has added three new data bundles to its range: 2.5GB for $19.90, 4GB for $29.90 or 10GB for $99.90.
If you’re looking to get on a Telstra Pre-Paid mobile broadband plan and need a dongle, you might want to check out Aldi. The discount supermarket is offering the basic NextG dongle for $79 from Thursday, which is $20 less than Telstra charges themselves. It includes 5GB of data, but it’s sure to sell out quickly, so make sure you get in early. [Aldi via OzBargain via Lifehacker]
You know how certain people keep proclaiming that wireless technologies are better than fixed broadband technologies like the NBN? Well, it seems they don’t factor in the all important aspect of price. As Spandas Lui at ARN has reported, analyst firm Market Clarity has found that mobile broadband can cost up to 1,333 times more than fixed broadband. Ouch.
MIT Professor Hari Balakrishnan thinks wireless carriers aren’t using their networks in the most efficient way possible when it comes to mobile broadband, resulting in slower speeds. His solution involves using your phone’s accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, barometer and GPS.
From the way Sprint’s Senior Vice President of Networks Bob Azzi was talking to PC World, LTE could be coming to Sprint sooner than later, thanks to a power struggle with Clearwire over their shared Wimax infrastructure. [PC World]
T-Mobile’s not quite ready to put it’s full support behind the 4G mobile broadband infrastructure. Instead, they want to take the current 3G HSPA standard they’re using, and make it as fast as 4G, reaching speeds of 650Mbps.
With some of the data deals popping up on smartphone plans these days, the need for an extra dongle to get your PC connected wirelessly are numbered. But they’re not dead yet, as exemplified by Vodafone cutting the price of their mobile broadband starter pack to $49.
Vodafone’s just refreshed its mobile broadband plans, adding a heap of extra data to their post paid offerings. Yay for bonus data!
