5:20AM Mark Wilson | At first glance, it’s just an ordinary bar playing some sporting event on television. You think, that’s not really anything special. I’ve seen bars before. Heck, I’ve vomited on bars before. And what is that? Oak? I’ve certainly vomited on oak. More »

IKEA + Apple = Mamebook Cocktail

4:00AM Mark Wilson | A MAME (arcade) cabinet will easily cost you several hundred to several thousand dollars. But one modder used a little ingenuity to take an old PowerBook with snapped hinges and fit it into an IKEA RAMVIK shelving unit. The result is a tabletop arcade machine รก la Galaga and Pac-Man that fits in a modern home. Here’s the funny shot that tells you it’s an Apple: More »

Dreamcade Vision 29, Big Screen Arcade Cabinet

4:10AM Mark Wilson | My arcade cabinet fever just can’t be thwarted—a disease that sits in remission until a new model pops up in my RSS. The limited edition Dreamcade Vision 29 is particularly interesting because it features a large, 29-inch arcade monitor perfect for burning your eyes out during marathons of Missile Command. Though the unit falls well short of authentic with its PC-based emulation, the long games list may change your mind as practicality enters the equation: More »

Video of Classic Star Wars Arcade Running on a Oscilloscope

2:37AM Jesus Diaz | Here’s an exclusive video of the classic Star Wars arcade running on an oscilloscope thanks to a sound card and a specially patched version of MAME. We talked with James Brown—the author of this hack, not the Godfather of Soul—about how he did it and the possibilities for his hack. Among them: connect it to a real laser cannon. Full interview and details after the jump.Jesus Diaz: Stunning hack, James. First question: can you run Asteroids on this? James Brown: It should run any of the vector games that MAME handles. I’ve only tried it with Star Wars and Asteroids though. I have a poor quality video of Asteroids running on it: More »

The New Stinger, Joystick PC/DVD Player

11:26PM Mark Wilson | Game Cabinets makes some excellent retro gaming systems, but their newest Stinger is not just intended for classic MAME fun. Instead, it wants to be an integral part of your home theater. Essentially a PC with TV-out and joystick controls, the Stinger can do anything a PC can do—including running Windows Media Center Edition and becoming a DVR. At a hefty 28.5×13.75×5 inches, the Stinger won’t exactly fit into the palm of your hand. But neither did the arcade games of yesteryear. We think it’s ironic that a a company looking to reinvent the classic experience of gaming is doing the same thing Sony and Microsoft are attempting with their latest consoles: to become an integral part of your all around entertainment experience. We’ll get Charlie to try the product out when it debuts at CEDIA, hopefully along with some more specs. And then we’ll make fun of it while secretly wishing we had one of our own. $499 [cepro via electronic house] More »
