Laser-Cut Apple Apple Mac Mini Pie Probably Runs On Vanilla OS X Ice Cream
4:00AM Jesus Diaz | I know. Apple pie is probably the last thing you want to hear about after yesterday’s stuffing, but bear with me on this one, because it is absolutely worth the nausea. In fact, it has made me hungry again. Evil Mad Scientist’s Lenore M. Edman wanted to do an Apple Apple Mac mini pie, and while her idea is nothing new, her implementation literally breaks the mold: She used a 45 watt carbon-dioxide laser to cut a lattice across the Apple logo. Why? More »

At Gizmodo Gallery: Free DIY Laser Etching
2:15AM Jesus Diaz | I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of laser etching all my tech gear, and it looks like I would finally be able to do it at the Gizmodo Gallery. Thanks to Make’s Phil Torrone and his laser machine, anyone walking in the Gizmodo Gallery would be able to tattoo their metal gadgets with Phil’s laser, absolutely free of charge. (He’ll be there on the first day we’re open, December 4th.) We will have some illustrations available for people to choose from but, if you follow these instructions closely, you would be able to bring your own drawings to use them with the laser. More »

Laser-Etched Powerbook Ensures Hands Never Leave the Keyboard, Ever
3:20AM John Mahoney | Instructables user noahw used an Epilog etcher to lase an imprint of his hands and forearms, eternally vigilant in home row position, onto the top case of his PowerBook G4. Noah says that typing on top of his own hands is “a little freaky” (as is the brownish mildewy patina on the etched keys, ahem) but if you are looking for something to bring your Mavis Beacon score up the extra five points you’ve been seeking, this could be it. Simpsons-Engraved iPods Are Great If You Don’t Have Your Own Laser Etcher
5:20AM John Mahoney | Unlike certain other Fox properties, seeing the Simpsons continue to be milked for merchandising doesn’t fill me with quite so much rage, so these officially engraved iPods are cool for hardcore fans. But for the US$80 premium over standard price for an iPod classic, I’m more inclined to take the one I already have to our pal Phil and burn in a portrait of Mr. Burns saying “Have the Rolling Stones kiilled.” [Fox Online Shop via Slash Gear] More »

Laser Tattoo Body-Modding, This Time it’s Not Painful: Fingernails
10:10PM Kit Eaton | The skin-ablation laser tattoo we showed you recently was creepy mainly because burning your naked skin is going to hurt, but this new laser body-mod tackles a safer target, fingernails. The portraits of famous bods you can see in the image are laser-etched into black nail polish (I know, it looks like they’re made of seared, blackened nail, but they’re not), and member lamedust over at Instructables has got a pretty comprehensive guide. So if you’re crazy, you too can etch pics onto the end of your digits. The video makes for interesting watching. More »

Guy Uses Laser-Etch Machine to Tattoo Himself (Verdict: Flaming Nutcase)
9:50PM Gizmodo US Edition | See that robot there? It’s burned by a laser-etch machine. On genyoowine human skin. Ohoho yes: that sent an icky feeling up your spine didn’t it? If it didn’t, then it should have. Try looking through the gallery, and then watch the video of a skin-etch in action, and that should do the trick… More »

University Logo Tattoo on Human Hair: a Micro-Scale Rebellion?
2:29AM Gizmodo US Edition | What do you do if you have a focus ion beam microscope normally used to make nano-devices, a scanning electron microscope and some spare time? Well, you etch your university logo onto a human hair, of course! At least, if you’re the Engineering Dept at McMaster University you do. It’s not the smallest logo ever— that’s an IBM one with 35 xenon atoms, I believe. But it’s possibly the ickiest, and it’s certainly high resolution. Impressive. We’ve only got one quibble: the uni logo, guys? I’m sure Giz readers would be more imaginative. More »
