Vendors Make HDTV Price Cuts, Inappropriate Statements in Response to Financial Crisis

Posted by Sean Fallon at 4:40 AM on September 23, 2008

The current state of the economy is unfortunate, but there is a silver lining if you are in the market for an HDTV. According to HD Guru, many HDTV manufacturers have started rolling out discounts to help increase sales. Sony, LG and Samsung are among those offering up to $US200 off on select models, while other companies are quietly offering "instant rebates" to dealers with the expectation that savings will be passed on to consumers in the form of sales. As one store manager HD Guru spoke with commented: "this has been the slowest week since 9/11!" Stay classy dude...stay classy. [HD Guru]

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 12:26 PM on September 17, 2008

cotd eee pc.jpgWe've told you about Eee PC deals before, but they were generally the smaller screen models. Catch of the Day today have the 1000HD Eee PC, which has an RRP of $699, for just $498 plus shipping.

Inside you get an 80GB hard drive, Windows XP, and a six-cell battery. It doesn't have one of the newer Atom processors, instead running off an Intel Dothan 353 chip at 900MHz.

There's also 1GB RAM, webcam and wi-fi built-in. If you're after a mini-note, this is a great deal.

Anti-Dealzmodo: New iPods Don't Qualify for Apple Back to School Promo

Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:16 PM on September 10, 2008

If you tuned into Giz yesterday, you may have noticed, if you looked really hard, that Apple released a few new iPods. And if you are a college student, maybe you realised that since the new iPods were available as of yesterday, they slipped right in for Apple's Back to School promotion (buy a new Mac, get an 8GB nano/touch free) that goes through Sept 15th. Unfortunately, a call to Apple retail revealed that Apple will not be honouring new iPods in this deal despite similar pricing. Sorry, college kids, I guess you'll just have to be happy with copious amounts of casual sex and inexpensive beer instead. [robreed]

Eee PC 1000H Price Drops Even Lower; US$450 on Amazon, US$360 on MWave

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 12:30 PM on September 9, 2008

In case Asus' US$100 price drop in July just wasn't enough to make up your mind on whether to spring for a new Eee PC 1000H, the mini-marvel's gotten even cheaper now. Amazon is selling an 80GB, XP-equipped 1000H for just US$450. Mwave also has several in stock for either US$450 (while supplies last) or, if you're willing to go for an open box product, an almost criminal US$359. [Amazon and mwave via Liliputing]

Amazon Cancels Orders for US$40 Sharp Aquos HDTVs

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 12:25 AM on September 9, 2008

Whether the Dealzmodo of the Century, a 52-inch Sharp Aquos HDTV for the eye-popping price of US$38.42, was a cockup or just a scammy scam, Amazon is now actively cancelling orders placed with affiliate myOfficeSource, whose Amazon storefront appears to be totally cleared out. So even if you did get your order in before Amazon stopped taking them, don't expect a giant TV to show up at your door. But at least you're not getting charged. Here's the full email:

Amazon Retires US$38.45 52-Inch Aquos, Puts Orders on Hold

Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:22 PM on September 7, 2008

Error or scam, Amazon has pulled the page with the 52-inch US$38.45 Sharp Aquos, probably overwhelmed by the orders from crazy Giz readers dreaming about a glorious, gigantic HDTV in their living rooms and/or toilets. Reader Max called Amazon to check on his order and they told him there was something weird going on:

Get A PSP For $35 From Sony Centre Stores

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 12:41 PM on September 1, 2008

Sony have a pretty awesome Father's Day promotion happening for the next week or so where you can pick up a PSP (The Slim and Lite version, not the new 3000 model) for just $35 when you buy selected Sony products from one of their 10 Sony Centre stores around Australia.

What's more, the money all goes to the Sony Foundation, helping developmentally delayed children.

Of course, you'll need to spend some dollars on Sony gear to be eligible - it's valid with selected Home Theatre or Receiver products as well as the TG1 Handycam. But it's still well-worth considering heading into a Sony Centre store if you're in the market for some home theatre kit from Sony, not just to get a cheap PSP, but to help some kids while you're doing it.

Dealzmodo: Bargain Logitech Universal Remotes With $1 Shipping

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 11:57 AM on September 1, 2008

Logitech dealz.pngForget about big screen TVs and surround sound speakers - the real heart of any home theatre setup is the universal remote. If you've never experienced the joy of pressing one button to turn on all the necessary components and select the appropriate inputs, ShoppingSquare has some great deals on Logitech universal remotes.

The Harmony 785, which RRPs for $400, is yours for under $150, while the Harmony One can be yours for $270. Rounding out the offers, you can pick up the Harmony 1000i for $280, down from $700.

To top it all off, they're offering shipping for just $1. If you ever want to own a home theatre setup, this is probably as good a deal as you're ever going to get on a decent universal remote. Sure, they won't do the whole home automation thing, but for this price, could you really expect it?

[ShoppingSquare - Thanks Joel!]

Kindle Gets US$100 Discount in Amazon, Chase Promotion

Posted by Kit Eaton at 12:49 AM on August 27, 2008

The Kindle is currently getting a US$100 discount if you get the Amazon Rewards Visa card and buy a Kindle with it: that's a 28% discount on the list price of US$359. Good for you if you're about to buy a Kindle, and obviously will push the sales of the Kindle. It also raises a couple of questions: is the Kindle not selling as well as Amazon would like, hence the large discount, or is this tied to ditching stock before the possible Kindle 2.0 update we've mentioned before, and that's gathering momentum online? What's your take on this, chaps? [AlleyInsider via NewLaunches]
