Apple’s ‘Brick’ is a Revolutionary Aluminium Manufacturing Process?

10:12AM Jason Chen | 9to5 Mac has gone on record as saying that the rumoured Apple Brick isn’t a product, but a manufacturing process that can make high quality aluminium shells. The “brick” part comes in because the supposed technique carves these MacBook casings with lasers and high pressure water jets out of bricks of aluminium, making for a seamless and screwless design. Whether or not it’s true is still left to be seen, but one benefit would mean that there would be no need to bend metal (which creates weak spots). Again, no idea if this is legit, but 9 to 5 Mac has a fairly decent track record, which they conveniently point out at the end of their post. [9 to 5 Mac] More »

Rumour Roundup: Apple Brick

3:40AM Mark Wilson | What is the Apple Brick? It’s a rumour that started over at 9 to 5 Mac. A trusted source told the site that the (also rumoured) October 14th Apple Event would be “all about the Brick.” The fun sort of spiralled from there, with plenty of guesses of just what the Brick could be… More »

LEDs Make Glass Bricks Cool Again

11:30AM Sean Fallon | Remember those glass blocks you would see in homes way back in the day? That crap was pretty tacky, but you still see designers utilising them from time to time even today. A new design for these bricks has emerged among the winners of the recent Red Dot Design Awards that uses LEDs to give the impression of changing light patterns stretching into an infinite space. Not much information exists beyond that, but I’m sure you can imagine how cool a room would look decked out in these. Then again, it could be tacker than the originals—just in a 21st century kind of way. [Red Dot Awards via DVICE] More »

Up Close and Personal Time With Phones Bricks Nissan I-Keys

4:15AM Seamus Byrne | If you have an I-Key from a 2007 Altima or Infiniti G35 jangling around in your pocket, don’t let it snuggle up to your cellphone. Apparently incoming and outgoing calls have the nasty potential to switch up or wipe out the I-Key’s internal code, leaving you with a sweet-looking but useless hunk of metal. A new version of the I-Key that’s hopefully less bricktastic around everyday objects won’t come out until the fall, but you can get a new key from your dealer if you render yours stupid since they can’t be reprogrammed. Until then, it might be a good idea to keep AAA’s number handy. – Matt Buchanan Nissan warns U.S. cellphones can disable car keys [Yahoo!] More »
