If You See Just One Sun-Baked Apocalyptic Love Story (With Cannibals), Make It The Bad Batch

Ana Lily Amirpour’s breakout feature, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, was as genre-defying as a Farsi-language black-and-white California vampire Western could be. Her colourful follow-up, The Bad Batch — a horror-romance (with cannibals) — just dropped an insanely grindhouse-ready new trailer.

First, here’s the official summary:

The highly anticipated follow-up to Amirpour’s acclaimed directorial debut, A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT, THE BAD BATCH follows Arlen (Suki Waterhouse) as she is unceremoniously dumped in a Texas wasteland fenced off from civilized society. While trying to orient her unforgiving environment, she is captured by a savage band of cannibals and quickly realises she’ll have to fight her way through her new reality. As Arlen adjusts to life in ‘the bad batch’ she discovers that being good or bad mostly depends on who you’re standing next to.

And here’s the trailer, which features glimpses of characters played by Jason Momoa, Keanu Reeves, and a dentally-challenged Jim Carrey.

In a world where it seems like every movie eventually starts to resemble something you’ve already seen before, The Bad Batch certainly looks like it will be refreshing — in a grimy, limb-lopping kind of way. It’s in theatres June 23.
