Although there’s been a short teaser trailer for the Japanese live-action adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa’s beloved manga, we didn’t actually get to see all that much of the Elric brothers — until now that is, even if they’re hidden in shadows and steam.
An update to Warner Bros. Japan’s website for the film for New Years included the release of the new image, which gives us a frontal look at Ryosuke Yamada as Ed, and our first full look at the movie’s take on his brother Alphonse, transmuted into giant suit of armour after the two brothers attempted to resurrect their dead mother with forbidden alchemy.
But it’s a pretty good live-action recreation (and, if the teaser was anything to go by, an actual physical suit rather than a CGI creation) of Arakawa’s original design, nonetheless. Although this is far from the first attempt to adapt the manga — there are two different, well-known anime adaptations — so far the movie looks like it’s doing a decent job of bringing the steampunk fantasy world of Fullmetal Alchemist to life. The movie is set to hit Japanese theatres in December.
