This past weekend, Bulgarian-American artist Christo unveiled his latest piece — a 3km floating walkway across an Italian lake. New satellite photos show how this ambitious work of art was put together.
For the next two weeks, visitors will be able to walk just above the water from the village of Sulzano on the mainland to the islands of Monte Isola and San Paolo. The 16m-wide “Floating Pier” consists of 200,000 cubes of high-density polyethylene, and it’s tethered to the lake bed — but with no guardrail.
The Sentinel-2A satellite managed to capture four images of the site as it was being built. The photos were taken from April 19 until June 21 when the structure was finally draped in yellow fabric.

We’re admittedly jealous of all the people who’ll get to walk along this thing. Hopefully Christo will eventually build something like this a bit closer to home.
