Heath Ledger 'Completely Ruined' Christian Bale's Plans For Batman

Heath Ledger

While out on publicity for his latest movie, The Knight of Cups, Christian Bale has expressed some second thoughts about his portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman for Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.

When interviewed for Yahoo Movies, Bale noted that he didn't quite capture the extent to which Bruce Wayne was messed up. This isn't the first time that Bale has said that he's slightly jealous of Ben Affleck's opportunity to play the character in this month's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

"Batman, he's this very very dark, messed up character. I found when I put on the suit, I feel like a bloody idiot if I don't use this as a means of his true, monstrous self that he allows to come out in that moment."

He went on to note that Heath Ledger completely upended all of his plans when it came to portraying the character. That's not really all that much of a surprise, given how much of a messed up character The Joker is.

Looking back, Bale noted that he didn't quite accomplish what he wanted to do with the character, but ruled out ever reprising the character again "Enough's enough - we did our thing".

It would be interesting to see just what Bale had in mind for a more screwed up Bruce Wayne, and how that might have looked.

Once we get a look at Affleck's Batman, it will be interesting to see just how the two compare, and who comes out on top.

As you read this, know a whole new batch of people are splicing American psycho into batman, and replacing the shots of Bateman's napkins with slightly bat themed versions of the exact same level of violence.

Dark knight trilogy is what most comic movies should aspire to be like, modern action/comic masterpieces. Wouldn't be too caught up on the comments about Bruce Wayne performances, not much will be able to touch that trilogy for a LONG time.

I hated superhero movies until that trilogy. I am now Batman crazed, can't get enough of it!

Nolan is the man, I'm sure you've seen inception and interstellar as well. I should really go through his entire works.... such a boss.

Interstellar... don't get me started - such an awesome movie. If you haven't seen it already, check out The Prestige.

There seems to be a lot of hate out there for Nolan movies, I really don't understand it. Nice to hear there are people with taste out there still :)

Interstellar and The Prestige? I disagree. Interstellar was just too long and flabby, the ideas and concepts presented were interesting but could have been presented in a much tighter package. It was a very poor structure. The Prestige was just based around a very silly story that would've fit better in a cartoon than a live action film.

My work crew watched Interstellar when we got rained out back mid 2015, a group of 15 or so guys glued to the screen from beginning to end with a couple of the guys so invested in it that their minds were just blown by what they'd just watched.

Sure, it isn't for everyone but they did a pretty good job of constructing it into the epic it is.

I agree somewhat with Interstellar, it could of been done a lot better, and the end was corny as hell. Still, best (space) Science Fiction movie of recent times IMO.

Christopher Nolan doesn't have the longest list of movies, apart from the already mentioned Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Interstellar... what would you of recommended of his works instead? Man of Steel ?

Memento has a lot of love, although it's been too long since I watched it last I don't remember how good it was...

Of course this is all a ruse by Bale to deflect critique of The Knight of Cups which — having recently seen a early preview — is pretty bad (and I like Terrence Malick).
