This Satellite Image Looks Like Some Kind Of Impossible Staircase

This mind-bending image looks like something out of Inception, but in fact it’s a view of fields in the south Khartoum area of Sudan. How the hell do they grow anything on that?

Just joking, of course: while the fields may look like a Penrose staircase, we are actually looking straight down at the land, and its’ just the orientation of the plots that makes the image look so strange. The picture was created by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2A satellite, which arrived in space in June.

You can see the full false-colour image below. Red areas show dense vegetation and, as you can see, it’s pretty tough going away from the Nile in the top right corner.
