Meet Emperor George II, Ruler Of Australia’s Smallest Micronation

The country of Atlantium has a national anthem, a postal system and even a pyramid monument — and all sits nestled in the quiet countryside of rural NSW. “We’re half the size of Monaco, twice the size of the Vatican,” says His Imperial Majesty George II, Emperor and first among equals, to give you some idea of Atlantium’s scale. It may seem like a quirky, somewhat odd move for George II to declare his independence from Australia, but it may surprise you to find out that there is a deeper motivation behind the formation of Atlanium.

“If you don’t like the way the world is, do something active to change it”, was George’s reason for forming his micronation — yes, Atlantium is a form of elaborate political protest. Its official views on many Australian Government policies, including the current treatment of refugees as one example, differs vastly from its host nation, and this is his way of speaking up about it. You can hear more from Emperor George himself in his interview with the ABC above.
