All The News You Missed Overnight: World’s Largest Hotel, Love With The Apple Watch And More

Technology is filled with all kinds of rumours, real and fabricated. It gives us a look at what might be and will be. All The News You Missed Overnight gathers the whispers all in one place to help you catch up.

Mecca — the ancient holy city that’s been the site of Islamic pilgrimages for millennia — is being turned into Disneyland. Helping complete its transformation? This 600m-tall hotel, which will tower over the city like a desert fortress on steroids, projecting a dazzling green laser show at night.

Four helipads cluster around the massive crown of what will become the world’s largest hotel. The monstrosity, which opens its doors in 2017, will boast 10,000 bedrooms and seventy restaurants, five floors devoted exclusively to the Saudi royal family, a bus station, a shopping mall, and a ballroom. It will be everything my Sim Tower-loving childhood self dreamed of.

Windows 10 is set to mark a sea change in the way Microsoft’s OS works, but even the modern-looking Windows 8.1 carries a bunch of legacy tools and apps that you may not know about. One of those is the Task Scheduler, a built-in utility enabling you to automate a multitude of tasks with no additional software required.

It’s in the venerable Administrative Tools section of Control Panel (under System and Security). Get it up on screen and you might be surprised at how many tasks are already listed — software update routines, antivirus scans, maintenance tasks and so on.

Meanwhile, over at The Verge, Ross Miller and his girlfriend tried to “fit the Apple Watch into [their] relationship”. It’s a test of how the device can stack up to Apple’s magical claims that it helps to fix all your fights.

There’s also an “artist” stealing Instagram photos and putting them in art galleries to be sold for $90,000. What even.
