Christopher Nolan’s space epic Interstellar is one of the most visually striking films in recent memory. It’s easy to forget that behind the imagery is the meticulous sound production that ties it all together.
In this nice short doc, the SoundWorks collection goes deep with Interstellar Supervising Sound Editor and Sound Designer Richard King. It’s unbelievable the care that went into creating the film’s jarring soundtrack. To create the sound of whooshing particles, one of the sound designers built a sand gun and spent an entire day just bouncing sand off an old van. Recording all of the groans and bangs of space ships was accomplished by both a visit to an aeroplane graveyard, as well as weeks (!) of experimenting with rattling metal objects on tables.
Most of all, the doc is testament to Christopher Nolan’s exacting style — as well as to the excellent results it yields. [SoundWorks Collection]
