Nintendo Is Developing A Non-Wearable To Track Sleep And Fatigue

While the world and his dog builds wearables of all kinds, Nintendo seems to be headed in a different direction. The company’s CEO, Satoru Iwata, tells Reuters that a newly created healthcare division is building a sleep and fatigue tracker — that you won’t wear.

The new device will apparently be developed in collaboration with a US company called ResMed Inc that already creates technology to help treat sleep disorders. “By using our know-how in gaming… to analyse sleep and fatigue, we can create something fun,” Iwata explained.

Which sounds… interesting. We’re not entirely sure how the gamification of sleep would work, but it will be interesting to find out. And, hey, Nintendo did it for exercise with Wii Fit, so why not snoozes too? It won’t, of course, be the first device to track your sleep from afar, but it may — possbily — be the most fun.

Iwata explained that the device will be about the size of a hand. Placed on a bedside table, it will use microwave sensors to track sleep. It should be available some time late 2015 or early 2016.
