Apple Watch Will Play Music On Bluetooth Headphones, No iPhone Required

The Apple Watch we got a glimpse at this week is a powerful peripheral device, but most of its tricks require it to be tethered to an iPhone in the user's pocket. Last night on Charlie Rose, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed one thing the Watch can do on its own: Send music to your Bluetooth headphones.

Cook wore a white Apple Watch during the interview and showed some of its features to Charlie Rose, who pointed out for viewers that the Watch requires an iPhone to be attached. Cook mentioned one neat little feature of the Watch, one we hadn't heard much about before:

It requires an iPhone, because they have been designed to work together. However, if you go for a run, and you don't want to carry your iPhone, music is also on your watch. So with a Bluetooth headset, you can run and listen to your music without your iPhone.

That's neat! And given the health-tracking sensors and features built in to the Apple Watch, wearing it on your jog isn't such an outlandish assumption. It also sounds like a great way for Apple to try and up-sell you on some Beats-brand Bluetooth headphones, for what it's worth.

"Tim Cook then revealed that the new Apple Watch has a revolutionary magical our best ever battery life of 27 mins in bluetooth mode."

Apple are so innovative, they've seperated the music playing component of the iphone, and placed it into a standalone pod that you can use to listen to music any time you want.

Yes Apple are innovative, but I'm pretty sure Tim Cook is just stating a mere feature of the watch, so try not to read into it too much.

you know what they should do, build just a dedicated music player. do away with the phone component completely and have it purely play music!

          What should we call it?

i......for intelligent and maybe...something like.....hmmm well it is pod shaped. but i dunno. i-shape?

Not sure if thats sarcastic, but they aren't, thats just a straight copy of what the Samsung Gear 2 does. Its been able to control music on the phone, store music itself and play it standalone and also play it on bluetooth speakers without the phone.

So, an iPod Shuffle with a watch strap?

I wonder how much memory is in the watch.

enough for one album. one U2 album.

But the watch still plays Vertigo. Over and over and over.

Just likethe ad from 10 years ago

I think you can play 10 songs in High Quality bit rate and 30 songs in lousy bit rate and battery is only good for 45 minutes in Bluetooth stereo streaming so you better run fast to beat the battery life.

You think, or did you read/hear it from an authoritative source post launch?

      That is to say, sauce?

Why is everyone jumping the gun on the battery life when no one has actually tested the thing themselves? Apple pride themselves on making sure they get the best battery life out of any of their products.. don't be so quick to judge.. You might be pleasantly surprised

Because battery technology progresses at a horrendously slow rate and bluetooth technology consumes a lot of power. There's really no escaping these two facts.

A comment many seemed to have forgotten in Tim Cooks keynote was their work with a breakthrough battery technology. We will have to wait and see. I think this is another secret kept under wraps away from the xerox machines of another company.

I love how all the comments are hating on the Apple Watch. Nothing more amusing than people taking time out of their busy schedule to just dislike something.

Does Google have some sort of affiliate program where you get paid to post negative comments on Apple stuff? You aren't doing it for free are you?

Yeah I agree. It's weird. It's even weirder to see all these haters hating on a product that is not even available yet! I read a bit about it and don't think I will get one but I didn't see any sign of Apple saying it was magical or first ever or anything like that. If they say anything, they say it's better than anything else, and really, don't all manufacturers say that? I mean who would put out a product and say 'you know, this product is ok but our competitors is so much better'.

im a big apple user and dig on everyone equally.....except windows phone users. I always give them a lil extra digging ;)

The same could be said of Apple fan-boys.

Funny, as I really don't see that half as much on Android articles. I'm not saying technology-naive fanboys aren't out there (the type that 100% buy into Apple superlatives) but it's much more likely to see Android fanboys flaming Apple articles than the other way around. Mainly because Android fanboys can't stand Apple's marketing and therefore think it's funny to call everything "magical" and "revolutionary" (as if those jokes haven't been done to death). No Apple user I know actually behaves the way the way they are portrayed, or uses that kind of sappy language to describe their products.

Weird as it may sound I love all technology! There are very few major technology manufacturers I don't admire or haven't bought into. I just happen to like Apple's phones the most. I do however jailbreak them to get the most out of them, but that's just me. I respect everyone's choices as we all have different needs and use-case scenarios.

tl,dr: Why can't we all just get along?!! :)

Exactly !! If they don't like it buy something else, it's funny how spent effort criticise a product that they don't even have details on... Go troll somewhere else Fandriod

The Gear 2 / Neo can already do this. Has 4Gb on board storage so plenty for a couple of playlists.

    Android

...I'm just wondering if the mere mention of the word causes downvotes...

      Why would it?

Seemes like any comment against Apple or any mention of android drew negative votes in this
        article

Apparently merely asking "why would it?" gets down votes around here though.

the fact i need an iPhone has dropped my interest which was high... to zero. I was hoping against hope i could use this as an alternative to my old iPod nano with the watch strap as i love having that as a watch that can play music but it's getting a little long in the tooth and i don't really want to buy back into an apple phone just for a watch :( ill stick to my cute red Nano then.

How long till the drooling fanboys vote me down for not having and iPhone anymore?

So I gather the Gear works with other OS's too then? Oh, wait...........

(Yes, with dumb comments like that you deserve down votes, regardless of calling people fanboys, fandroid)

This is so typical Apple and of their users, everyone goes OMG what an innovative feature, yet other android smart watches have been doing this for a while now.
Please someone spank them with a bit of their own medicine and sue the f@#K out of them like they do to everyone else.

How about the dozen or more other features no other watch has then? Hatred is like drinking poison in hope your enemy dies. Drink up!
