The Surface Mini Exists! (As A Mistake In A User Guide)

Last month’s announcement of the Surface Pro 3 left a lot of people asking “Hey so where’s that tiny Surface I was hearing about?” Rumour had it that it was cancelled at the last second, and now it seems like that was definitely the case; the Surface Pro 3 User Guide is littered with references to it.

Initially pointed out by Paul Thurrott, the Surface Pro 3 User Guide makes four explicit mentions of the Little Surface That Apparently Couldn’t:

  • “Before you use your Surface Pen the first time, you’ll need to install the AAAA battery. You’ll pair your new pen with Surface Mini a little later during setup.”
  • “Rotate Surface Mini the way you want it.”
  • “Click the top button to open OneNote, even if your Surface is locked. Bluetooth technology links your Surface Pen to your Surface Mini or Surface Pro 3, so when you click the button, your Surface responds instantly.”
  • “If you want to do more than take a quick handwritten note, unlock Surface Mini.”

This says nothing about what the plan for a Surface Mini going forward is, but instead just confirms that yes it was definitely a thing at some point. It also confirms that no one editing that User Guide thought to do a ctrl+f for “Surface Mini” before releasing it into the wild. But, hey, everbody maeks mistaks. [Paul Thurrott via The Verge]
