Disney Just Shut Down LucasArts

150 staff laid off and two stellar-looking games cancelled. This is it: Disney is closing LucasArts.

Kotaku reports this morning the mega-studio that acquired the Star Wars universe from George Lucas for many billions last year has started swinging the axe at various properties, starting with LucasArts.

The staff are now out of a gig and the Battlefield-esque, Star Wars: First Assault has been cancelled, along with the Blade Runner-esque, Star Wars 1313. Sources say it's unlikely the properties will be licensed out to other studios.

To be honest, this has been coming for a while. Late last year, Disney ordered a hiring freeze at LucasArts and ordered hat no new announcements be made about the studio's developments.

It's pretty sad to think that we won't see any more Star Wars games out of the legendary studio, which has been open since 1982. We've enjoyed such classics as X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, X-Wing Alliance, the Dark Forces games and even the very first Rebel Assault games.

Vale, LucasArts. [Kotaku]

We can only hope that the worthy creative people in the dev teams at Lucas Arts will join forces and create a new and even more amazing company which will pick up the shattered pieces of these awesome games without the terminal management which ultimately doomed them.

1313 had so much potential to be awesome.
    Very sad news indeed.

Damn you Disney...oh well...I think I might go play Monkey Island and Grim Fandango just to reminisce of better times

It's pretty obvious that the star wars games don't have enough cutesy talking animals and happy endings for the Mickey Mouse Club.

I would kill for a re-make of X-Wing vs TIE Fighter!

Then why the hell do I continue to be spammed about SWTOR despite unsubscribing every damned time.
ACMA must be getting sick of me forwarding this spam to them

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

So many great games, I'll forever miss the times playing Full Throttle and Sam and Max amongst all the other games.

Sad day. Jedi Outcast, Battlefront, even Podracer were great fun and the studio that made them deserves better.

Besides, I would have thought LucasArts would have been a major reason Disney would wanted Star Wars anyway

Disney has its own game developers and a college to train them. Why would they keep an under performing group on the payroll when they already have their own?
