Facebook Is Making Its Own App Store

Facebook just announced that its making a new app store called App Center that will help Facebook users download apps on any platform — Facebook, the web, iOS, Android and more. App Center will work over the web and on Facebook iOS and Android apps too.

According to Facebook:

The App Center is designed to grow mobile apps that use Facebook — whether they're on iOS, Android or the mobile web. From the mobile App Center, users can browse apps that are compatible with their device, and if a mobile app requires installation, they will be sent to download the app from the App Store or Google Play.

The new App Center won't be like a traditional app store though, it won't list a normal 'top apps' list instead choosing to personalise app recommendations to a user's tastes. What's more, Facebook says that success in its App Center is tied to the quality of the app which uses user ratings and engagement and other factors to determine. It sounds a lot like an app recommendation service rather than an App Store killer.

Developers can build their app pages now and the rest of us can try and count how few things Facebook isn't trying to be a part of. [Facebook]

"...which uses user ratings and engagement and other factors to determine." Hmmm. "and other factors"? Maybe a developer could pay money to FB to become "prominent"? I don't see how this would be better than going directly to Google Play.

Facebook making an App Store? This ought to be good, on account of they can't even make a single iOS app themselves that actually works.

I was going to say the exact same thing for their Android offering too!

    Fapp store?

Ha, now that FB is floating it'll have shareholders that will demand ever increasing returns so, I guess, having an app store is one way to try to make more money. Next will be to charge people for premium services.

Hey, maybe y'all whingers will finally get the "not-shit FB app" that you've all been clamouring for.

Something better than m.facebook.com? I'd like to see that!

lol I think I'll just stick with the regular app store thanks. Top apps will always go to the highest bidder

Just what I needed. Another Digital Content Store for me to worry about on top of iOS/Google Play/Amazon/Steam/Origin. Is there really any reason for this to exist other than make FB's investors more money?
