SCRW: The Chair That's Always The Right Height

The SCRW's striking design is brilliant. No matter how tall you are or what table you're sitting at the chair adjusts with just a turn to exactly the right height.

Designed by Manuel Welsky, the chair's seat is a big piece of cork with threads that screw into an aluminium frame. When your tall friend comes over for dinner, just turn the seat till it's at the right height. Those of you who play drums — or are familiar with drums, anyway — might recognise similarities to the screw-seat design of a drum throne.

At $US660, the SCRW is pricey, but that's OK because it really shouldn't be the only piece of beautiful adjustable furniture out there. Someday, hopefully, all chairs will be this brilliant. [Welsky via FastCo Design]

Too bad it offers no back support.

I'm sure there's 101 better uses for a giant novelty cork.

Cork will smell like ass in just a few months of use.

I'm 6 foot 6 (200cm) and have yet to find anything to properly cater for my height!

    SCREW the chair...
NOT only drum stools but probably the majority of Antique metal framed stools, I'm thinking of old piano stools had a screw adjustment feature...

Before the days of Gas struts, I think probably every adjustable stool had a square screw in its centre...

The days when a kid could have fun spinning around on the stool as it changed height (until it wound right out and fell over) may be returning....

BUT isn't cork sort of hard to get in those huge sizes ?....

Wouldn't it be better to use all of that cork to make thousands of wine corks??

And make a practical stool/chair out of more durable materials.....
