Why Is This Carrier’s Deck Packed With Cars?

This is the USS Ronald Reagan — the ninth of the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered supercarriers — cruising the Pacific Ocean. But instead of having combat jets all over her deck, it’s packed with cars facing a single F-18. Why are they doing there?

Those are sailor’s vehicles. The ship is now changing port, going to Naval Base Kitsap — a US Navy base on the Kitsap Peninsula, Washington — for a Dock-Planned Incremental Availability maintenance. There, she will be dry-docked and get upgrades to combat, defence, navigation and other ship components.
