iPhone 4S, iPad 2 Get An Untethered Jailbreak

It took a while, but owners of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 finally have an untethered jailbreak. Yup, it’s time to start putting ROM apps on our iOS A5 devices.

The updated Greenpois0n tool is called Absinthe A5 and can be downloaded here. Yeah, the servers are getting hammered pretty hard, so you might want to wait until later in the day to get your jailbreak on. The tool works on the iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 and the iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1.

According to the Greenpois0n folks, the hack was a bit more difficult than previous jailbreaks and took “thousands of hours of brain-power & effort from a legion of world-renowned hackers.” The tool is OS X only for now. But a Windows and Linux version are on their way. As always, anytime you jailbreak your device there’s a chance you could brick it. Do not come crying to me if that happens. I warned you. awesome news – servers are down but managed to find elsewhere without much effort. Haven’t tried yet but have read that it can take up to 30 mins so be patient.

Update: The server are getting hammered so the last process where you click the “jailbreak icon” to finish doesn’t work. If you delete the icon created from your first attempt and re-jailbreak using the new version from:
      http://cache.greenpois0n.com/dl/absinthe-mac-0.1.2-2.zip

it will point you to a new server for the last part of the process and you’ll be good to go!
