A lot of Kickstarter projects are launched with little more than an idea and a mockup, but the tentatively named FourPro iPhone underwater housing was field tested while filming great white sharks. So I think it’s already proven itself.
Rated to survive depths up to 30 metres in saltwater, the Mocean Armor rig uses the same materials as professional submersible camera systems. The housing and cross bar are made from marine grade billet aluminium, teak wood handles, with pressure enhanced rubber seals ensuring your phone never sees a drop of liquid. The iPhone’s display remains completely visible when inside, and while you can’t operate the touch screen, recording is controlled via a sealed mechanical button that presses on the volume up control.
A donation of $US400 secures one of the underwater housings for yourself once they go into production, which also includes a carrying case. And if you don’t get in on the ground floor, the actual MSRP is $US700. Now I know trusting any contraption to protect your device underwater is a sketchy prospect, but if it’s good enough for a National Geographic videographer, I’m inclined to believe it’s more that suitable for filming my antics in the pool. It’s a bit of a joke they would even try charge $700 when you could get a case and strobe for a real camera for the same price or less. The noise on low light photos (which they all are more than 3 meters down) from the iPhone would make this a waste of time for the price.
