(A Version Of) Comic-Con Headed To Australia

Gizmodo AU

It doesn’t seem to be affiliated to the actual San Diego / New York Cons, but from March 31st next year, around 10,000 faithful are expected to converge on…Adelaide. Guests include Stewart McKenny, Jonathan Frakes and Jewel Staite (who I’ve had crush on in both Stargate Atlantis and Firefly). Oz Con then moves to Melbourne on June 30 with none other than Stan Lee and Patrick Stewart! Updated.

Full list of guests can be found at the OzComicCon site. Let the cosplay begin. Who’s going?

Not true! Only last month we launched the bid for the 2018 World Indoor Basket Weaving Championships and on the weekend the Morris Dancing Festival went beserk!

If thats the case then Melbourne will put in a bid to take them away from Adelaide.

Haha, maybe. But at least the convention punters won’t have the spectacle of Mike Rann making a goose of himself at every photo op. I was getting tired of him dry-humping Lance Armstrong’s leg every January.

You’d be surprised. AVCon is one of Australia’s biggest conventions and it happens in Adelaide. Loads of interstaters come to AVCon. Adelaide is quickly becoming the convention capitol of Australia.

Even more reason for them to hold a con in Adelaide, don’t you think!

      (Also, it was awesome)

jesus christ this is not comic con, stop giving them advertising this is a company with a history of fraudulent behavior claiming to be comic con international but is in no way connected to the american counterparts they don’t even have the license to call their event oz comic con and will probly be sued before melbourne even comes around.

Jesus, they have never claimed an affiliation with San Diego Comic Con. I think the name is more intended to give people an idea of what kind of event they can expect, same as all of the other Comic Cons throughout the world.
Further, the event is clearly sponsored by The Hub Productions, who have a long standing and good reputation for hosting smaller boutique events throughout Australia as well as having brought headliner guests to some of the already established expo style events in Australia.
Looks to me like they are just branching out and giving the Australian nerd/geek community what they want.
And kudos to them for debuting in Adelaide. I know a lot geekily inclined people that are based over there and I think it’s a great, and up till now, largely untapped market.

you haven’t actually read the press release have you, it pretty clear their claiming to be connected. they were kicked out of all other events for their behavior and illegal operations they have a history of being in trouble for names of their event such as a star trek event a while back and their glee event. they are not even a registered company. even if they weren’t claiming to be connected the use of comic con is misleading as the event isn’t a comic convention its an expo, they are using the comic con name in a attempt to leech of the famous trademark.

If you look carefully at the site, they do not appear to be affiliated with THE Comic Con in the US. And the event is sponsored by Hub Productions who do other conventions in Australia.

Just out of interest, what actually goes on at Comic Con. I know they show some trailers and stuff for upcoming movies and TV Shows, and have panels with actors, but is that all?

From what the site says and from what I’ve heard, its going to be like the Supanova or Armageddon expos – just run by a different promoter.

So there will be loads of exhibitors selling sci-fi/fantasy/anime merchandise, as well as actors, comic artists and voice artists doing talks and signing autographs. There’s also cosplay.

As for trailers from the major studios, like they show at San Diego, I don’t see that sort of thing listed in their general blurb.

Yes Perth is a crap hole. My neighbours have, no joke, a huge confederate flag hanging in their front lounge window.

Village? Dude please, Have you actually even visited Adelaide? Don’t judge a place before you’ve been there.
Maybe I’ll just listen to people next time when they say Sydney is a terrible place to live.

That being said, Sydney gets a lot of events for the Geek/Nerd community, why are you so against Adelaide having an event for the NUMEROUS Nerds over here?
If you really want to attend, either travel to Adelaide or Melbourne, like what us Adelaide folk have to do if we want to attend Sydney/Any other state’s cons. Stop thinking your so special.

Sydney is full of geeks? Sydney has the SMALLEST anime convention in all of Australia, even Perth has a bigger anime con.

Also check the numbers, Adelaide has some of the biggest numbers in Australia for their conventions despite being one of the smallest cities.

AVCon is pretty big here, so they must be assuming they’ll pull that crowd.

It does seem weird – the ABC article I read yesterday heavily suggested it was the same as the San Diego Comic Con.

Now it just sounds like AVCon with a different name.

Also: what’s with all the anti-Adelaide trolling?
