Half-Faced Illusions Are Twisting My Brain

This photography illusion, made with a Samsung L100 camera and Photoshop, turns half of a person’s face into a picture of their profile too. Are they looking straight at you? Or looking to the side? I can’t freaking tell and it’s giving me brain sores.

The project, titled 1/2, was created by Venezuelan student Jesús González Rodríguez. He tweaked layers in Photoshop to create a mind trip of a photography series. Sometimes when I look hard enough, I convince myself that it’s a profile picture. Then I blink and re-focus and it turns into half a face. WHAT IS GOING ON? I can’t think about it anymore BUT I CAN’T LOOK AWAY. [Jesús González Rodríguez's Flickr via My Modern Met]

the eye in the top picture has been photoshopped to look as though it’s in profile

It is an impossible face. The eye and eyebrow is facing sideways but the rest is facing forwards. It is all photoshop.

The other 2 pics are facing forward but shaped like a profile shot.

Must be a slow day at the office.

Once you look at the eyes and nose, the effect goes away.

That is both super cool and super freaky at the same time.
Very clever work, and def more effective when the eye is in profile as well.

This one was doing the rounds on Twitter the other day, I think it has a much better overall effect. http://twitpic.com/7991kn
