It’s not going to help your battery life issues, but if you want to break free of Apple’s checks and balances that prevent you from running any old app on your new phone, you’ll be happy to hear that the iPhone Dev-Team is already demonstrating a preliminary jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.
Based on a tweet from MuscleNerd, iClarified is reporting that while the Dev-Team has found a way to get Cydia to run on both devices, the jailbreak is still “very preliminary” and “Huge missing pieces prevent public release. LOTS of work left…”.
So it’s no where near ready for primetime at this point, but enough to get people excited, and more than enough to put another burr under Apple’s saddle. I’ve also included a video that both demonstrates Cydia successfully loading on an iPad 2, and that techno music can improve even the most mundane clip.

Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 4:37 PMAwesome… the only reason i would jailbreak my iPad 2 is to try Siri.
Luke
Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 4:43 PMI should add that its inevitable that Siri would be ported over.

Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 9:41 PMNot necessarily. Siri is part server run. Which means depending how Apple goes about it, they can block any device that isn’t meant to run it.

Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 5:04 PMUmmm they have been jailbroken from the moment they were released, even if it is a tethered jailbreak.

Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 5:39 PMNot the 4S, buddy. Only the iPhone 4 and below.

Monday, October 31, 2011 at 9:25 AMMate, iPad 2 WAS jailbreakable on 4.3.3 using jailbreakme3.0 (the only jailbreak so far released for iPad 2 so Adam is right and the three of you made fools of your selfs. Funny being sheep haha
Also should mention that siri was SUCCESFULLY ported to iPod touch 4G and iPhone 4 today, however, he said he won’t release the port due to it most likely being very illegal. He disguised the device as a iPhone 4S (which he did after he got a hold of a jailbroken 4S ;)
Y’all should learn to read around before spewing garbage ;)
Can’t wait to jb my 4s (jumped the gun and made the switch from 4 too early)

Monday, October 31, 2011 at 10:53 PMPoor Jack, you’ll believe anything you read. The “port” of Siri is a very questionable one, even the two guys purporting to have done it aren’t in agreement. Siri, like every other Apple ipa has a code signature which can’t be fudged, and will most likely be shut down by Apples kill switch. You’d need a jailbroken iPhone and hacked ipa of Siri, using appsync to kill code signing, and a way to bypass the servers accessing Siri commands. This is just another form of piracy. Would you go to as much trouble to play a hacked game?

Monday, October 31, 2011 at 8:47 AMWow you bought an iPhone 4S after having an iPhone 4. I bet that was worth the $800-$1000. Although you could sell the iPhone 4 for $500-$600 so I guess you paid 300 for a better camera and a dual core processor

Monday, October 31, 2011 at 10:07 AMiPhone 4 and below will always have the tethered limra1n (bootrom) exploit it’s nothing new.
As for this new jailbreak it is an untethered user land exploit, which will be patched by Apple.

Monday, October 31, 2011 at 11:40 AMJust buy an Android already.. if you want configurability/flexibility.. why buy a phone that is inherently NOT flexible and then “break” it, thereby voiding the warranty etc, when you can just get an Android phone that is like that out of the box?
Jack
Monday, October 31, 2011 at 2:01 PMWell, you can always remove the jailbreak by restoring the device (just a click of a button). So that is not a big deal at all.
Not to start off a war here but I used to have an android device and I had to root the device to perform things on my phone. Are you able to “un-root” your device? Can you go back to the default rom that was shipped with your device?
light487
Monday, October 31, 2011 at 2:05 PMYou can go back to an unrooted device. You need to have a copy of the original rom of course but I’ve seen links and forum posts to that affect.
My question was one asked out of genuine curiousity to find/understand out why people would do that.. why not just get a customisable phone from the outset?
It’d be like buying an iMac and then forcing it to run Ubuntu (ok.. extreme example but I hope it clarifies my curiousity)

Monday, October 31, 2011 at 11:05 PMAnd how to you get past the fragmentation? You buy a device and your telco gets to choose whether you can update the firmware or not? Then you have no choice but to root the device if you want to update to gingerbread or ice-cream sandwich. Take a look at the graph here about device compatibility http://www.minyanville.com/dailyfeed/2011/10/28/sad-comparison-of-iphone-and/

Monday, October 31, 2011 at 6:22 PMHey light487… good question. Some of the jailbreak apps I have not been able to find equivalents. Maybe you can help because i am happy to move to android if there are good equivelents.
BiteSMS: literally pops up over whatever app you are in (does not move you to the message app) and allows you to respond. And also allows you to, within any app, open a new message overalayed on top of app you are already in. very nice interface aswell (especially in ios5)
Lockinfo: Calendar appointments, twitter, mail, facebook and Favourite Contacts.
SBSettings: I’ve heard there are some android equivelents but none seem as nice and polished as SBSettings (ability to add toggles) E.g (Vibrate on/off) (SSH enabled) (Veency on/of) and really any other toggle you can think of.
Call Bar: Unobtrusive notification when you are receiving a call.
Ilocalis: Output your location after every X amount of minutes. Then being able to see your location through a website. E.g. I can see where i was 01/05/10. Im sure android has something similar.
We all agree ios5 is restrictive, after jailbreaking it does really everything I would like. What are advantages of Android over Jailbroken Iphone. Basically I don’t like the 4s really like the Galaxy Nexus! just scared of losing these jailbreak tweaks. Also one of my most used app, Metlink Melbourne is not on the android market last time i checked i think there was a beta of it but was really buggy.
