Alan Turing’s Biopic Might Get Leonardo DiCaprio

Alan Turing, the venerable WWII-era nerd icon who helped crack the Nazi Enigma machines and came up with the robot sentience-checking Turing Test, is the subject of a new biopic, and apparently Leonardo DiCaprio “has the inside track” to play him.

Warner Bros bought the script for The Imitation Game for seven figures after bidding against several other studios, which Deadline claims is because Leo is lined up to star as Turing. No one’s officially attached to the film yet, but Ron Howard is also rumoured to be interested.

Hollywood rumours are just as fickle as tech rumours, so don’t be surprised if casting takes a left turn, but still: DiCaprio, Turing, WWII, Enigma machines, fighting Nazis, the British government being dicks. Come on, you’re seeing this. [Deadline via NY Mag]

Bloody hell, it’s bad enough that the Yanks made a movie that showed them finding the enigma encryption device, which they did not, but now they’re going to portray the guy that broke the code! Why couldn’t they find a Pommy to do it? Not that ‘DiCaprio’ doesn’t have the chops for it, he’s a damned good actor,.. but he’s a bloody Yank! Oh well, once you suspend your sense of disbelief, you will believe anything, eh?

Kinda disagree. It really shouldn’t matter if the actor is a yank or a pom or whatever… It’s their job to “act” as the character, no matter if that character resembles the actor’s personality/background etc.

As long as he doesn’t have an American accent, I can’t see anything wrong with an American acting as an Englishman (actors have been doing it for centuries).

So by that criteria you would be happy for an American playing the part of Dame Nelly melba or some other icon ? Personally I prefer Australians to be portrayed by Australians and the same goes for other countries icons. I don’t think its racial either just more believable, and more sympathetic to the charachter.

I agree with you, he’s a good actor and I could see him playing that part well.

If it had to be an Englishman playing the part, I think maybe Jude Law or Ewan McGregor (Scottish) could do it. They both may be a bit old though seeing as Turing was in his late 20′s early 30′s at the time of WW2.

I think Leo played the of a South African very well in Blood Diamond. So he can do it with this. IMO Leo is one of the best actors in Hollywood. I would trust him in almost any role.
