Lunchtime Deal: Kogan Offers Free TVs

Gizmodo AU

Ruslan Kogan’s never been a man to shy away from attacking his retail rivals. His latest gambit? Find an equivalent telly on sale cheaper at JB HiFi or Harvey Norman, and he’ll send you one of his — for free.

There are limitations to the deal; the TV has to be in stock, you’ve got to match type for type (so LED TV for LED TV, and so on), you’ve got to cover the costs of shipping and the promotion ends ‘at the time and date decided by the Promoter at its sole discretion’ according to Kogan’s terms and conditions which you can find here. This kogan guy is so dodgy. Have a look at ozbargain and you will see he is already changing prices around to ensure his doesn’t have to give any away. There are also some screenshots on ozbargain to claim a free 32 inch. Worth a try

Why would he knowingly give away free stuff?
It sounds like he is doing a good job ensuring he has the lowest price going around which is only good.

@Oscar – what is dodgy about lowering prices? I’ve been following this, and JB lowered their price to compete with Kogan, and then Kogan responded within a few minutes. This is healthy competition – do you have any idea what you’re talking about?

Also, commence the countdown to the obligatory whinge from Harvey Norman about what is wrong with us ¨pigs in sh!t¨ (ie his customers).

Don’t fall for this lame crap from this retailer or any other… business are there to make money, not give it away.. they will ensure there is nothing that can be used as an excuse for you to claim a free telly .. its just a trap to lure in suckers who weren’t planning on buying a set into buying a set.

On the other hand, I have bought several items from Kogan, including a TV, and they continue to work well. Friends of mine have bought Kogan TVs and they continue to work well except in one case where a repair under warranty was required. The repair was done very quickly and the TV returned with a minimum of time passed.

Further, a near relative bought a brand name TV for a little over $3,000 (smaller screen than mine) and it broke down very quickly indeed.

Digital electronics tend to be very reliable wherever they are sourced, but you can’t count on everything to work well all the time!

On a side note, what is the concensus on the quality of Kogan TV’s? I’m considering getting one for the bedroom and I’m leaning towards Kogan as they appear to be the best in terms of the cheap home brand market (vs Soniq, GVA, DSE, etc)

We have two Kogan TVs now; one is more than three years old and continued to work well. The other is fairly new and is excellent. The screens on these TVs are very good indeed and while family members have bought far more expensive TVs their screens are not clearly better, they just have more doodads, like the unwanted and unloved 3D capability.

Ahh, but here’s the kicker …

“a Kogan Product which has a built-in PVR feature may only be deemed to have equivalent or inferior specifications to an Competitor Product which also has a built-in PVR feature”

    and

“a Kogan Product which has a certain size screen and resolution may only be deemed to have equivalent or inferior specifications to a Competitor Product which has the same size and resolution screen”

So not only to you have to match size and panel type, you have to exactly match resolution and functionality.

Considering all Kogan TVs have PVR, but far less HN / JB TV have USB-Record, Kogan is on a pretty safe bet here that no-one will be able to do an accurate match.

I’m sure Kogan has already researched these well, and have a very short list of matching TVs – and will simply lower prices below HN & JB for any of these.

It’s funny how Kogan says this:
“Some even produce a supposed price match guarantee where they will “match the price” or “beat it by 5%” if you see it cheaper. Aussie shoppers know these type of claims are empty – all the retailer is agreeing to do is to charge the market price if a smart customer goes to the effort of proving that their prices are a rip-off. ”

I think Ruslan forget about this page though:

I too saw the deal from JB-Hifi both in store and on-line, so I sent an E-mail to Kogan with the details.
I have just received a call from Kogan and they will honour the free TV as advertised!
Say what you may of Kogan, at least they are keeping their promise and my daughter will be very happy with her new TV :)
