The Sad State Of One Of The Most Iconic Buildings In The US

This sad gigantic building is the mighty Hangar One, one of the largest freestanding structures in the world. At a whooping eight acres (32,000sqm) it’s also one of NASA’s biggest buildings. It has seen better days.

Hangar One was built in the ’30s as the station for the USS Macon, which was a flying aircraft carrier for the US Navy (it carried Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk biplane fighters on its belly). The iconic structure, which is one of the strangest buildings of NASA’s Ames Research centre in California, is now being renovated after cleaning up all the asbestos materials.

I can’t wait for the renovation to be finished. Seeing it like this makes me a bit sad.

well, as far as I know, the “renovation” is never gonna be finished. I was there about three weeks ago, and the previous day the word had just gone around that NASA no longer had the 20 so million dollars to reskin it after removing the old skin to clean up PCBs. this photo’s obviously more recent than that, as they’d only just started the removal process when I was there, including the windows made of corrugated glass, which would cost more than 50 bucks per square foot to replace now. man, what a sad sight…
