News Of The World Probably Tried To Hack 9/11 Victims’ Phones Too

And now for some news that probably won’t shock you: According to a report in the Daily Mirror today, reporters from Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World asked a former NYPD officer who was working as a private investigator to access the phone records of British 9/11 victims.

The Mirror‘s anonymous source claims that:

“This investigator is used by a lot of journalists in America and he recently told me that he was asked to hack into the 9/11 victims’ private phone data. He said that the journalists asked him to access records showing the calls that had been made to and from the mobile phones belonging to the victims and their ­relatives.

“His presumption was that they wanted the information so they could hack into the ­relevant voicemails, just like it has been shown they have done in the UK. The PI said he had to turn the job down. He knew how insensitive such research would be, and how bad it would look.

Yes, that would look pretty bad! Just like hacking a dead girl’s phone, or the phones of other victims’ families, or even the families of dead British soldiers. It’s unclear if the reporters were able to gain access to the phone records and voicemails of 9/11 victims, or if this latest report is even accurate. Either way, this scandal has become the Murdoch gift that keeps on giving.
