Fukushima’s Radiation Now Spreading In Japanese Meat

You know what happens when your nuclear reactor explodes, sending radioactive materials into the dirt? The irradiated gunk gets into the plants. Animals eat the plants. Humans eat the animals. You can see where this is going.

Japanese health officials have found radioactive cesium in packaged beef, CNN reports – beef that in all likelihood’s been eaten by now. The source of the contamination lies in hay from the agrarian Fukushima Prefecture, and the Japanese government doesn’t yet have a handle on how widespread the tainted meat has become. They are, of course, downplaying the danger of the radioactive meat, despite the fact that caesium isotopes are among some of the worst to ingest. Luckily, a bolstered screening process will be implemented on Japanese farms, replacing the previous (and highly superficial) self regulation. [CNN]

Excuse my ignorance, but does anyone know if facemasks actually help prevent radiation poisoning? Or is it just the done thing after nuclear fallout?

They wear them for the air pollution that is common over Japan.

Whilst I dont think they are wearing them to prevent radiation exposure, its possible that masks may have some benefit if the air happens to be laden with radioactive dust as at least it would stop it from entering the body to some degree. Dust can be washed off of clothes and skin, harder to wash it from your lungs.

Everybody in japan wears facemasks when they are sick to prevent the spreading of germs, has nothing to do with radiation.

I was in Japan two weeks ago, frying up a storm at Japanese BBQ places. No horns yet. That is, after all, the scientifically proven first symptom to look for, right?
