Back in 2004, iiNet decided to try and build its own network to try and combat Telstra’s monopoly. Today the company announced its just installed its half-millionth broadband port in Gosford, NSW. The lucky customer connected to that port also wins out, with iiNet giving her 500,000GB of data and a Fetch TV service – hopefully she doesn’t have to use all that quota in a month… [iiNet]

Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 1:52 PMAnd yet there’s still nothing (iiNet’s words, “NOTHING”) iiNet can do about long old copper cabling, owned by Telstra (well more like disowned) that connect many people in old suburbs from the iiNet exchange kit to their homes, giving us in return unacceptably low speeds. I like iiNet, but I’m not happy about the fact that they and the other providers can do nothing to improve the situation for many of us. A situation caused by the copper-cable monopoly of Telstra.
Only when iiNet start installing their own cable to homes, or forcing upgrades will they be able to seriously combat this stalemate. But for some of us, the idea of switching to wireless 4G services like Vivid Wireless is becoming a better option, that will provide more than double current ADSL cable speeds.
Will the NBN help?

Certainly will… Essentially the NBN will be replacing that cruddy old copper with fibre optic cables, which will be installed and maintained by NBNco.
