Apple Is Now Selling Unlocked iPhone 4 Handsets From $US650

Can you believe that an iRumour has come true, for once – and early? Apple’s started selling unlocked iPhone 4 phones in the US, with the 16GB model (in both black and white) costing $US650, and the 32GB models coming in at $US750.

While this is a step forward in the right direction for Apple (after they started selling unlocked iPhones in the UK last year), US customers can still only use them for 3G on the AT&T network. They can, however, use them with T-Mobile microSIMs, but only on EDGE. Business travellers will now also be able to pop a microSIM in there if abroad, and take advantage of their host country’s new rates. [Apple via SlashGear]

You don’t really need 3G over there anyway- so many good free WiFi hotspots! I’m sort of surprised at how cheap they are, but then they ARE last year’s model.

Why don’t you just get an iPod touch then if you don’t need 3G.

What are you talking about? The EDGE network here is crap. Seriously, if I could get a proper AT&T account (you need 6 months for a credit history when you move here or pay $500 up front) then I would. Well another month or two to go but I would never say that you do not need 3G here in the US.

Sure you can go to a Starbucks for WiFi, but even that is not something that is convenient especially when your on a bus or just walking down the street or even in a restaurant.

EDGE really, really sucks and if you’re happy sitting in one spot while you track your maps or check mail and what not then don’t even rely on the Wifi.

Is there anything stopping me purchasing one of these using a service such as borderlinx?

You sir are a CHAMPION. I have been trying to figure out a way of ordering makeup from Sephora in the US without handing my money to a friend and making them go to the hassle of buying it for me for years.

Wow Apple are trying to milk every last cent out of the iPhone 4 before announcing an iPhone 5.

I’d like it if they unlocked all iPhone 4′s that have already been purchased for free. I know the Telstra network unlocks for free but what about the competitors?

Question is are they going to reduce the cost of the iPhone in Australia? I mean this is almost $300 AUD cheaper than the 32GB iPhone on the Aussie Apple store. Even with tax it’s cheaper.
