The Samsung Cube Camera, Too Bizarre To Exist

A recent interview with Samsung’s camera division yielded some interesting bits about their lenses—but the real star was this photo of lost prototypes. The model with the three vintage-y dials is gorgeous. But the cube? Uhh. Uhhh.

We’re all for experimenting with form factors, but I can’t imagine anyone wanting to whip out a cube-shaped camera (from where? a big cube-shaped pocket?) and start snapping. Still! There’s something charming about the mutant—itself a king of retro-looking artifact from a future we’ll never use. [Samsung Imaging via PetaPixel]

Nothing wrong with a cube shaped camera, it’s like the old Hasselblads and great for shooting from the hip looking down on it rather than shooting from behind the camera.

Yep, clearly the author of this piece is oblivious to medium format cameras..

p.s. I don’t have an SLR sized pocket either but that doesn’t stop me from using one.

I’m sad that this author is so uninformed. This was covered as a laugh-in-their-faces article about the form factor of a Samsung prototype perceived to be ugly, when in reality this is could be a massive story; is Samsung ready to jump into the ring with the 39 mp blad, the 40 Pentax 645D and other emerging ‘budget’ medium format cameras?

We already know Samsung and Pentax have collaborated numerous times in the last few years and released equivalent products, such as the K20D and GX20. Very interesting.

…Except that the referenced articale is about the NX system, the raison d’etre of which is small-sensor, small-form factor, small lenses.

So I’d agree: the Hassy form factor is not a good look for a camera with such a small sensor. What is taking up all that extra volume?

        The “extra volume”?
If it’s a medium format sized sensor, then a good third of that cube would be sensor plus supporting electronics, and the hatch on top could hide an LCD/AMOLED screen. Another possbile layout is that the majority of the box is required for a reflex mirror, so that there can be a ground-glass screen on top under the hatch (yes, a real optical viewfinder, just like a real Hassy).
        This is all just speculation.
