San Francisco Is Giving Away Free Charges To Electric Cars

San Francisco, you lovely place you. The city by the bay is installing at least 90 new charging stations in city-owned parking garages for electric vehicles to juice up… for free.

The stations will include both 110v and the fast-charge 240v options which people can just plug into with no worries. The idea is to get more people to buy electric cars and it doesn’t cost the city too much, as each charge is around $US3. Great idea for a great city. [The Examiner via Venture Beat]

    It’s Official: DBM Energy’s Electric Car Battery Is Real !

    New independent test confirms 454.82 km driving range on one charge!
    It weighs just 770 pounds,
    For comparison, the Tesla Roadster’s pack, which claims 245 miles of range, weighs 990 pounds.
    The car’s creators even claimed a 6 minute recharge time.

    It passed extensive independent safety tests, demonstrated endurance of 5000 charging cycles, this battery will last 27 years.
    Lithium cells of Kolibri Lithium battery have undergone a very rigorous tests according to the video from the website of German Ministry For The Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

    Mr. Hoffmann also cites estimates that the mass-production cost of a 98.8 kWh version of the pack would range from 800 to 1,000 euros, or from about $1,100 to $1,400, which is thousands below current costs.

    Plus, Nano-Optonics Energy Inc of Japan will produce electric vehicles with in-wheel motors.

    It will travel 300km on a single charge – about double what current electric cars can get and employ four motors, one for each wheel.
    And SIM-Drive said the price of final electric car should be “on the same level as gasoline-powered cars.”
    Who can resist this fascinating technology ?

    Nothing of what you claimed there is true. All independent testing confirmed for DBM was, that the batteries may be transported according to UN manuals. The rest is just DBM claims. First they claimed 300Wh/kg energy density. Now they’ve reduced that to no more than 160 Wh/kg. They never quoted a price anywhere. All they ever said was, that a car using their batteries wouldn’t cost significantly more than running a “similar” (but otherwise much faster) car with petrol when calculating with the claimed, but untested, lifetime of the battery and German fuel prices. That equates to around 120.000$ for the 99kW/h pack – NOT 1.200$.
    Look around you and you’ll see that 160Wh/kg and a price of 1.200$/kWh is what you can already buy everywhere today. (Except from DBM, of course. The stuff they actually shipped to (very few) customers only achieved 115 Wh/kg).

    San Francisco is wasting its tie and the people’s money on these rather useless charger stations.
    With a 120 or 220 feed, these chargers can only serve, at most, a few cars per day. Apparently San Francisco doesn’t know a whole lot about the electric car business. Power sources as flimsy
    as these belong in a person’s garage, not a public space. Can San Francisco spell Level 3 charge station? I believe San Fran needs to spend a few bucks and hire someone who knows
    something about electrics before they start throwing away big bucks on these charge stations.
