After A Year, NASA Is Hanging Up On Mars Rover Spirit

From the New York Times: Spirit has been incommunicado for more than a year despite daily calls by NASA. The cause of Spirit’s silence may never be known, but it’s likely the bitter Martian winter damaged its electronics, preventing the six-wheel rover from waking up.

    Well, if you use a flat solar panel, and you put it out in the desert with lots of sand and dust. What do you think is going to happen? Oh, right. So the dust and dirt cover the solar panel, and there is no power in the batteries to shake it off. Genius.

      Yes. A machine that lasted ten times it’s design life is mostly certainly badly designed. How NASA manages to get through the day without your input Andy certainly remains a mystery.
