A horrifying discovery: The white iPhone 4 may be ever so slightly thicker than the black iPhone 4.
One guy tells MacRumors it’s enough of a fatty difference that the white iPhone 4 wouldn’t fit into an Incase slider case designed for the iPhone 4. Another, who shot the above photo, declares that it “immediately felt thicker” when he picked one up.
To the iPhone 4 specs page! The iPhone 4′s stated dimensions: 115.2mm x 58.6mm x 9.3mm. And the fine print to go with them: “Actual size and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process.”
And the white iPhone does, it seem, use a different manufacturing process than the black iPhone, given Phil Schiller’s statements about it being “challenging” to manufacture:
It’s not as simple as making something white. There’s a lot more that goes into both the material science of it–how it holds up over time…but also in how it all works with the sensors.
He also mentioned it needs more UV protection from the sun. Which could explain why, if the white iPhone 4 really is a hair thicker, it’s got a little more junk in its trunk.
At this point, I’m pretty sure the phone is cursed, so you carry one at your own peril. [MacRumors, Image: Ryan Cash]

Friday, April 29, 2011 at 9:47 AMNormally, I’d agree, but this article is about how it IS different to the black iphone 4. Still don’t see all the buzz about it all though.

Friday, April 29, 2011 at 10:13 AMThe extra thickness probably comes from the extra layers of paint where they’ve covered black with white.
I’m sure Disney’s Alice in Wonderland had a song about it, “…we’re painting the iPhones white…” or something of that ilk.

Friday, April 29, 2011 at 12:17 PMIncase Slider is an incredibly tight case though to the point where it doesn’t fit on a regular iPhone 4 if you use a screen protector and can potentially scratch the phone so no big loss imo

Friday, April 29, 2011 at 2:01 PMI still don’t understand. White iPods were fine, white iPhone 3Gs were fine, white iPads are fine…
I’m guessing it’s to do with the glass? I just haven’t been able to work out why there needs to be so much extra design for this one product.

Monday, May 2, 2011 at 11:11 AMThe white iPads were a result of the things apple were doing with the white iPhone 4, and the 3GS iPhones were on painted white on their backside – compared to the iPhone 4′s is glass all over.

Friday, April 29, 2011 at 4:21 PMJust my two cents..
Picked up the white iPhone today. My old black iPhone 4 goes to my husband. I compared and this is what I found:
1. The white is a teeny tiny thicker. It still fits great into my clear incase plastic cover. It doesn’t feel heavier.
2. The home button on my black 4 had a more ‘crack’ type of sound when I hit it. The white 4 is more of a softer ‘clunk’…. Which means it sounds better.
3. One thing that’s annoyed me about iPhones is being able to hear the vibrator rattle. They almost all do it to some extent. NOT the new white 4 I got today. Sounds alot sturdier when I set it down.
Just a few observations…
