Sony’s Android Tablets Are Game, Music, Video Titans

Focusing on the things that matter most to Sony – style and media – their first two tablets are running Android 3.0 (yes, Honeycomb) and come in two very different form-factors. You’ll recognise the familiar shape of the S1, which measures 9.4 inches, whereas the S2 is a sort-of DS-type clamshell, with dual screens that both measure 5.5 inches.

Sony says that the S2’s dual-screens can either be used together or as alternatives to the traditional monitor-and-keyboard format: when browsing the web, both screens can display the content together, but when playing a game or checking email, the lower screen will act as the controls or keyboard.

While full specs of the Tegra 2 tablets haven’t been confirmed by Sony yet, we do know that both of them have Sony’s Qriocity download store pre-loaded, for music and video downloads. Obviously tablets are well-geared for reading ebooks on too; something Sony hasn’t forgotten. Their Reader Store features all the ebook content users of their Reader ereader devices have been downloading, and as with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play handset, the PlayStation Suite will have all the necessary PlayStation games you might want to play. If said games are Crash Bandicoot and Asphalt 6, obviously.

Interestingly, the S1 slate can actually be used as a universal remote control for various Sony Bravia devices such as TVs or Blu-ray players, letting you perform actions such as changing the volume, turning up the volume, and use DLNA to transfer media to TVs and speakers (this latter function works with non-Sony devices too.)

Sony hasn’t detailed when these two bad boys will be let out of the hatch, but we do know they’re both going to be Wi-Fi and 3G/4G compatible, so expect to hear about some carrier exclusivity in your neck of the woods.

Sony Corporation (“Sony”), announces “Sony Tablet” that delivers the perfect combination of hardware, content and network with seamless usability for a high-quality, engaging entertainment experience.
