Rumour: Apple May Launch Its Own NFC Format Next Year

British newspaper The Independent has heard from various sources at UK networks that Apple’s next iPhone won’t have NFC, as the rumours have suggested recently. If true, that’d certainly put a dampener on paying-by-swiping taking off this year.

According to one of the paper’s sources, “the new iPhone will not have NFC, Apple told the operators it was concerned by the lack of a clear standard across the industry”. What’s possible is that Apple could introduce its own NFC format next year, with the payments linked to iTunes.
