Petrol Is Still Way Cheaper Than Water

Sure, you’ve been paying more at the pump for fuel lately. But how expensive is it these days, really? Or rather: How much more expensive than every other liquid you buy? Pretty cheap, actually, at least in the US!

Good put together this handy infographic (click to embiggen) of how much various items cost were you to purchase them by the gallon. What’s petrol cheaper than? Fiji bottled water. Two Buck Chuck wine (which could probably fuel your car in a pinch). And you could buy about 250 gallons of fuel for the same amount as one gallon of nail polish.

That’s not to say that gasoline isn’t relatively expensive compared to what it was three months ago; of course it is! And that’s frustrating. But the next time unleaded eats up your paycheck, be comforted in the knowledge that short of bleach, there’s not much cheaper liquid out there to pump. [GOOD]

Bottled water is 1,000 times more expensive than tap water. Article headline is misleading.

It’s fairly safe to make the assumption that they’re talking about bottled water in the headline, since it wouldn’t make much sense to compare it to tap water – something that outside of a component of rates payments you don’t strictly buy.
I like to think Giz can give their readers a little credit, especially when just writing a fun little comparison article that lets a pretty picture do the talking.

I hate these sort of ridiculous comparison pieces, especially when they relate to fuel, they border on trolling.

The flagrant ignoring of the different methods of production and usage for these liquids almost insults the intelligence of the reader. Or, am I supposed to believe that the author uses similar quantities of lube and hand lotion as I do quantities of fuel?

If you really want meaningless figures I can produce a litre of urine for free, should we compare my free urine with the price of fuel?

In Australia we are ripped off for water big time. Bottled water is actually comically inexpensive in the US. You can pick up a slab of 24x 20oz for around $3 or less.

By my calculations that makes it significantly less expensive than gasoline.
