The $79 Pure Siesta Mi Is An Affordable Bedside Digital Radio

Gizmodo AU

Despite my constant suggestions to upgrade, there’s still one piece of technology in our house that’s old enough to be considered an antique – my wife’s bedside clock radio. She’s owned that thing for at least 20 years, and although it still works, it reeks of 80s gadget ugliness. I’m seriously considering the Siesta Mi from Pure as a replacement.

At $79, this bedside digital radio is both affordable and significantly better looking than the off-white device adorning my wife’s bedside table. It supports both DAB+ and FM stations, and has two independent alarms. Which is good, because I always end up sleeping through alarms anyway.

I recently purchased a Pure Siesta iDock as our old bedside clock radio decided suddenly that it would add radio-snow to all AM stations from now on.

The Pure Siesta iDock has good sound (for the price, and the size) and the multiple alarms (each with their own volume setting) it’s perfect. DAB reception is pretty amazing too, for me tripleJ is clearer and ‘fuller’ than FM.

There are a bunch of great DAB radios out there, but I needed something to fit on a bedside table. There are tonal options in bass and treble, and the iPod/iPhone dock is fine.

The iDock has a iPod/iPhone dock, 4 alarms (why? I dunno, but you can set ‘weekdays’ and ‘weekends’ so we have two alarms for weekdays, one for weekends and one left over…), FM and DAB. The display dims to 3 or 4 levels and has a single line of DAB information display (Sydney ABC702 has the occasional weather update).

It was an expensive option for a bedside table (just under $200), but for me the only option for a compact, DAB capable, reasonable sounding, nicely designed, multiple alarm clock radio.

Whatever you get make sure it has a battery backup. I got a neat new one last year that has a cordless phone handset docking station in it too, but it doesn’t have a battery backup so whenever the the power goes off (like this morning), you have to program the radio stations, time, date, alarms etc…. too boring
