Telstra Desire Froyo Update Coming This Week. Really*

Gizmodo AU

Telstra’s been teasing the Froyo update for the Desire for what seems like an eternity, but this morning Director of Telstra Mobility products Richard Fink promised the update was coming this week.

The holdup, according to Fink, was on Google’s part, thanks to some problems with the update internationally. But Google approved the update yesterday, and Telstra is now working with HTC to get the update up on HTC’s website, which should happen this week.

*Fingers crossed this time it happens, hey?

I’ll believe it when I see it. Many people have rooted their Desires and it seems like this delay has almost encouraged such debauchery!

For a system thats supposedly “open”, its kinda ridiculous you have to go to those lengths.

Spare a thought for SE Xperia X10 users (no, I’m not one). Not only are SE out-to-lunch on the whole situation of updating but device owners will also have to go through the same 6-12 month wait that us Desire owners, that are waiting, are going through.

I hope Gingerbread at leat partly solves all this fragmentation. They should take a leaf out of WM7 and iOS’s book, by providing a mandatory stock UI, and an OS that can be updated directly from Google rather through the manufacturers and Telcos. Mind you, for that to happen, they’d have to stop putting all their stupid skins and crappy bloatware on there and that isn’t likely to happen :(

Already rooted my phone and installed a custom ROM. Sorry Telstra, I don’t put up with broken promises and I really didn’t want any of your c**p anyway.

Telstra blaming it on someone else wasn’t expected at all.
