It was a throw away line at the end of a story by Ben Grubb about the iPad not being subsidised on ZDNet, but apparently Optus is rapidly closing in on its 1 millionth iPhone sale in Australia. And that’s huge. It made me wonder what type of phone Gizmodians use on a day-to-day basis.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 9:35 AMiPhone 3GS since July ’09. Nokia n95 prior to that. iPhone 4G in a months time? Here’s hoping!

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 9:41 AMI just sold my iPhone 3G in favor of a HTC Desire. Not interested in going back to the iPhone anymore.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:46 AMGood man, 2 months more on my contract and I’ll be following you!

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 3:19 PMIf you’re with telstra, they will let you do it now and waive the remaining ETC.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:53 AMInteresting. Thinking of doing the same but waiting to see how good iPhone 4 is & hoping we might get the HTC EVO here.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 12:20 PMThat’s the game changing phone, I NEED an Evo, but everything I’ve read about it basically tells me it won’t work with Australian telcos at all.
Nathan
Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 1:49 AMIt won’t work in Australia!? Any source links? I had my heart set on importing the EVO. I just emailed HTC about it, maybe they’ll give me a good answer.

Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 11:38 AMUnless Telstra are planning to revive the CDMA network (during the cold season, when hell freezes over), the EVO isn’t going to work in Australia.
Don’t worry too much, HTC will probably release a GSM phone with a similar form factor before too long. Or you could get an HD2 and hack Android onto it :)

Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 8:16 PMI just got this from HTC:
Dear Nathan, Thank you for contacting HTC. We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service and promptly responding to all your questions and concerns. Thank you for your high interest on the HTC Evo. You have the option to purchase through the internet and the basic features will work with Australian Networks. Though any ROM upgrades on the handset, can only be done on the country of origin website. Thank you and kind regards.
I’ve replied to them again to clarify to me that 2G and 3G networks will be supported.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 9:50 AMI use a ‘dumbphone’ – a samsnung f480i because really when you think about it isn’t a 49 dollar or 80 dollar cap just way too much? I’d definently like an HTC style phone but it’s just too much :(
matt
Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:37 AMagreed! $30 6 month prepaid FTW!! :D
though new android is VERY tempting.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:04 AMiPhone 3GS since its release…
Have trialled a HTC Desire and a Blackberry 9700, but nothing on them makes me want to switch… Although I do hope Apple makes some GUI changes soon… as I feel the UI is getting a little stale… fingers crossed!

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:07 AMHTC Magic with the Sense UI update. Not sure if I will stay with Android for my next handset as I find being stuck several versions behind frustrating. The next model iPhone looks quite nice.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:11 AMI’m using a crappy Nokia 5800 that I’m getting rid of as soon as the next-gen iPhone comes out.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:07 AMAndroid don’t make hardware. I’m interested in the hardware…

Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 11:31 AMFair call, but for another QOTD, ask about OS instead….that would be very interesting.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:18 AMHTC Desire for the last 6 weeks, Nokia E71 prior to that.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:23 AMNo Google entry? Let’s call it HTC then.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 2:03 PMSo if I use an Xperia X1a where do I vote?
:)
Steve M.
Monday, May 24, 2010 at 4:41 PMThe Xperia is a Sony Ericsson handset, so oddly enough you should select Sony Ericsson in the poll.
klaw
Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 11:32 AMThink you missed the point dude…..
Sony Ericcson don’t actually make the X1, HTC does. It’s a re-brand, just like the Nexus One.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:24 AMI currently have a HTC Tattoo and love it, but I bought my missus a HTC Desire and now my loveable Tattoo is looking kind of lame. I am waiting for three to pick up a decent android HTC handset so I my phone won’t look so underwhelming in comparison to hers :)

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:27 AMstill on htc dream since april ’09. Eyeing the android horizon at the moment waiting for the next flagship model with keyboard, hopefully its that moto nexus 2 rumor that is persistently floating around, but wouldnt mind getting another htc

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:28 AMiPhone 3G here, and in August I will probably be upgrading to the 4th gen iPhone.
Currently on Optus, but constant poor service will mean that I’m going to swap to Telstra at the end of my contract (it may be more expensive for less, but I’ll be able to actually use my phone the way it’s supposed to be).
BJ
Monday, May 24, 2010 at 12:57 PMSame boat as Sam. Around 60% of my calls drop out due to a combination of the iPhone 3G and Optus. The data speed makes web surfing too painful to be done on anything but Wifi. Too bad I’ve got almost another year on my contract :(

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 3:03 PMme three…
3g on optus since day 1
will be jumping from optus as soon as the contracts up – lousy coverage, lousy service, hidden charges…
I’ll give vodaphone a try – Telstra’s gouging is outrageous

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:34 AMI also went from a N95 to a iPhone 3GS.
But I will likely be going Android when my contract eventually expires.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:45 AMCurrently a 3G however I hate having to resort to jail breaking to achieve functionality I want. Am waiting to see what the next iPhone has in store and if I’m not happy with that will probably go down the Android path.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:47 AMNokia N96 here.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:54 AMiPhone bought through Optus. Ditched Optus asap as their network coverage in the Melbourne CBD was appalling. Now sick of freezing with iPhone and using itunes. I considered the HTC desire but will hold fire for a few months and see what else falls down the Android pipeline (and who I am kidding, I will also consider the 4G iphone :-)
Simon Reidy
Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10:58 AMAging iPhone 3G. Looking forward to upgrading to the right Android handset when my contract expires. Hopefully some kind of insane Froyo beast with a 1.3Ghz snapdragon processor, 1280×720 res screen, 1080p HD recording and a 13 bazillion megapixel camera.
Tom
Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:20 AMCurrently running an iPhone 3GS, although my wife has been eyeing it increasingly in the last couple of months. I’ll await the 4G specs, and if I’m interested I’ll grab one of those and give this white baby to the missus. Although the Desire is mighty tempting, I don’t know how long it’ll be til I can get an unlocked one or three start offering it.
AJ Lazaro
Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:30 AMHTC magic running, latest cyanogenmod for donut, waiting for a froyo one to come out if ever (wasn’t interested in 2.1 once I heard about froyo =D)

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:46 AMImported a Nexus One. My wife has a 3GS.
My opinion is this:
-Want a simple, user-friendly smart phone? Get an iPhone.
-Want customisation and to be able to do anything you want with your phone? Go Android.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:53 AMUsing the HTC Dream (G1), but switching to the iPhone when the new ones come out. Still interested in Android, but I just don’t feel it’s far along enough. iPhone OS just feels so much more polished. May switch back some time, but not just yet.

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 12:15 PMIphone 3GS and 3G before that. From what I’ve seen of the leaked phone, I probably won’t be getting the next one. I love my iphone but I think Apple are living in the past (2 years ago).
