While taking his Tesla Roadster for a leisurely drive from Darwin to Adelaide as part of the Global Green Challenge, Internode founder Simon Hackett just happened to break the world record for the longest distance travelled by an electric vehicle on a single charge. Way to go Simon!
The world record happened on the fourth day of his 3000km journey, where Simon and his co-driver pushed the Roadster to take them 501km on a single charge, smashing the previous record by 110km.
That’s a pretty fantastic effort. If only we could all drive Roadsters, the world would be a much better place.

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 1:58 PMWhat would the tow truck used to pull that nice flashy red sports car out of the nice sunny red middle of nowhere be fueled by? Diesel or Unleaded? Gonna wait for somebody with yet another petrol powered vehicle to come along and give you a charge, hehe.

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 2:05 PM@Corey – This is mainly a trial, it is emulating what it would be like if there were recharging stops along the way (which hopefully eventually will be solar powered).
You should try to look into it a bit more :)

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 2:26 PMLooks like ‘World Record’ was written in crayon!!! I don’t expect the record to stand however, everyone knows it is downhill from Darwin to Adelaide.

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 3:07 PMTom, I think you mean Alice Springs to Adelaide is a downhill trip. Darwin and Adelaide are both at sea level. Alice is around 600m above sea level.
Incidentally, to get into the Guinness Book of Records the trip would need to be done in both directions.

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 3:07 PMCongratulations to Corey Evans and Simon.A for proving beyond a doubt that humans are the descendants of monkeys… some not even particularly distant.
Well done to Simon Hackett! I’m a proud Internode user and fanboi :)

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 3:35 PMif he lost some weight it might have been 502km

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 3:35 PMDon’t get caught up with the wishy washy environmental concerns, electric cars like that are a lot faster, quieter and all round more awesome from a gadget fanboi perspective.
Can you imagine how good it would feel to not be held hostage by petrol prices?
A good solar setup on your roof + electric car means self sufficiency big time. I think this is awesome

That’s my point. Without the solar power (or some other clean means of charging), electric cars have absolutely no purpose. Besides so Directors of companies can say “hey look what I did” and give ignorant “greens” something to talk about.
@Mez
You certainly are a, as you put it, a “fanboi” as you insulted us without offering any creditable retort or furthering the discussion in anyway.

Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 11:55 AMCorey – it would be good for you to hear the whole story. Simon was on ABC radio in Adelaide 16.4.10. He said that even using using electricity from coal fired power stations, the emissions from his Tesla would be equivalent to under 2 litres per 100 kms if you compare it to a petrol car. The price of the Tesla is obviously out of reach of us normal people, but there are already practical electric solutions for commuters. It’s still early days for the electric car — the future is very exciting, but being held back by ignorant skeptics and vested interests who like the status quo. If nothing else, watch the movie ‘who killed the electric car’
