If you haven’t caught on to the phenomenon that is Google Wave, it’s probably about time you did. It’s Google’s game-changing application combining email, live collaboration and messaging, which goes only a small way towards explaining its potential. About 100,000 people have been invited to its beta workout. Here’s a snippet from Attack of the Show, via Techcrunch, that might help bring Wave’s potential into focus.

Seems heavily overhyped to me. Saw an interview with the guy in charge of the project, who said it began because they realised people were still relying on the “20 year old technology” of e-mail. It looks to me like all they’ve done is tart up the incredibly recent technology known as “the chat room” to me. And the real-time-typing thing is going to be the first thing people are going to want to turn off.

Maybe you’re right…but I’m still itching to get my hands on one and give it a go. Put me out of my misery, Google!

Yeah, I thought the same – what does it really do for me that email and IM don’t already? Threading’s better, live typing, easy media sharing etc, but probably not enough to switch for.
Then I started thinking of it as an “upgrade” for static web pages instead (like this one), and that made much more sense to me. They demoed it embedded into a blog, but it’d make a really nice “live” discussion forum too, and the collaboration/discussion mix would be perfect for wikis too. Anywhere you have info and/or discussion on a website, you could embed a Wave instead and make it all live and fancy. Plus it can all tie into a single client, so you can track your various conversations over different sites.
Now I’m thinking of it from a work angle. It’d be ideal for studios; artists & directors working on a project need to share info, pics and comments about revisions. I’m contemplating a custom extension for my VFX app to automatically insert render updates and warnings etc, and now I’m starting to get pretty excited about what I could do…

I think that’s a very boring view of the world RK.
Google Wave certainly has “Chat Room” elements, but it also has IM Elements AND E-Mail elements, and I think that this has a chance to really change they way we communicate, especially in a corporate sense. I would love to see this released as a product ready to drop into corporate environments.
