Optus Rolling Out Cupcake To HTC Dream Owners ‘Late July’

Gizmodo AU

Reader Daniel loves his HTC Dream, but was a little unimpressed by the company’s reticence to actually upgrade the Android software to version 1.5 (Cupcake). So he asked Optus about it on Twitter and actually got a response: they’ll be rolling out the update in “late July”.

To be more specific, they actually say: “HTC Dream owners on Optus network will start receiving the upgrade to Android 1.5 (Cupcake) from late July.”

So if you’re a Dream owner, I wouldn’t panic if August 1 rolls around and you’re still on 1.0.

About time too! Now if only we could get a comment on paid apps too…
I’m still waiting on a response to my double whammy complaint to Optus about this (from 3 days ago).

We’re actually on Android 1.1. They’ve also asked Optus about the paid apps thing too and their looking into it.

Yes I was the other half of the Twitter harassment re: cupcake. I also asked about paid apps and got pinged today as follows:

Wanted to update you – am tracking down the answer on your paid apps question and will report back asap. -Seb

Yeha I emailed Douglas (email given in a whirlpool thread to complain about the lack of customer service for the G1)

Still not going to hold my breath on the OTA download till it actually happens.

Has been enough people complaining since it was released in the US and Europe in May and for us to have to wait > 2 months for the same software from Optus is pretty damn slack

I just gave up waiting and went straight to xda for the cupcake as well as the new hero build.

2 months is way too long for an upgrade that doesn’t really need to be customized much.

Lies! July 31 and still no update. Tech support told me to ‘download the update from the HTC website’ and I had to inform them that it didnt work that way. They told me no update was planned.
If anyone asks me I have to say that the phone is a heap of crap and Optus service is worse. Don’t buy the phone and stay away from Optus.

I spoke to someone senior from Optus yesterday.

they say please be patient they are doing their best to get paid Android apps enabled as soon as possible and know that people are very keen to get access

I have been patient for several months since the day I bought that phone.
I don’t think I will buy any phone or any service package from Optus anymore. And I will advice everybody I know that not to go with Optus. They are sucked.
