When Steve jobs first showed off the iPhone back in 2006, there was one cool feature that somehow never made it out here in Australia with the iPhone 3g: Visual Voicemail. But today, Vodafone has finally launched the service for their iPhone 3G customers. To get it on your Vodafone iPhone, simply sync your phone, check for updates in iTunes and then turn your iPhone off and on.
You can save up to 20 voicemail messages on your iPhone, and the only difference to charges is that it actually requires you to use some of your data plan to work. The service will work with pre-paid plans as well, although Vodafone does make a point that they don’t have a pre-paid iPhone plan at this point in time.
Now, if only the other networks would follow suit so the rest of us don’t have to suffer with regular, boring voicemail, the world will be a much better place.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 11:51 AMVodafone are once again ahead of the pact for the iPhone. I can’t wait to try out visual voicemail, I might even have to miss a call on purpose.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 12:10 PMIt’s a great idea. Shame though that it doesn’t actually work (yet?).
Although the SMS I received from Vodafone said I will be able to use it “within 24 hours”. Which is a bit of a joke if you ask me. Why not just sent the SMS when I CAN ACTUALLY USE IT!!
I also use the 3.0 firmware so I’m not sure how this will affect me. Right at this moment though, it doesn’t work.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 12:24 PMMine is active as of now. I got an SMS off vodafone this morning saying it would be activated within 24hours and said to go to http://www.vodafone.com.au/vv for more information. Looks like the update gets pushed out over the air, as I haven’t synced with iTunes since last night, yet my iPhone started acting up about 2 hours after the SMS. Rebooted it and “iPhone Activated” was displayed. Visual Voicemail is now working…. Hmm…

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 1:43 PMBecause Visual VM was not available I customised the voicemail button on the phone to ring the vodafone voicemail access service. Any idea how to reset it back so that Visual voicemail works?

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 2:58 PMI have all but given up on Virgin giving their customers ANY sort of decent service, let alone visual voicemail (something that they advertised to me as a feature when I bought the phone by the way).
There is no way in hell this will happen on this absolutely terrible carrier.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 3:10 PMNot working for me either. Called Voda and they said they have had a few people reporting problems and I should wait a day or 2 then try again.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 7:09 PMA very poor implementation, considering information is available on their public site. A company really shouldn’t promote a service as if released when really it isn’t.
For anyone wanting to comment to vodafone, there’s a post on their GetSatisfaction page: http://www.getsatisfaction.com/vodafoneaustralia/topics/visual_voicemail_failed_rollout_poor_training_in_your_call_centre

Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 9:12 AMJust a heads up for some of those having problems;
This is available on the OS 2.2.1, The vodafone technician was wrong in saying it was only available on OS 3.0.
Anyone having issues, try performing a restart of your phone (hold down the power button until it asks you to ‘slide to power off’ and then slide it across, wait a few seconds and turn the phone on again) Or try plugging your phone into a computer with an active internet connection, and check for updates.
Otherwise, give iphone tech support 1300 321 456

Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 9:36 PMI have called Vodafone twice now. The first time they said OS 2.1.1 was correct for visual voicemail and I am all up to date and should be able to use it so they told me to call 1217 to activate it. However when I called this I just got a message saying voicemail could not process my call. So I called Vodafone a second time and the person told me that I needed OS 3.0…… SO CONFUSING! I think it will be great once I can actually use it, but it is way to frustrating to set up.
I wish they would get their story straight and agree they should only advise it can be used WHEN it can be used and not POTENTIALLY when it can be used
