Optus iPhone Pricing Announced
Posted by Nick Broughall at 1:21 PM on July 3, 2008

With only 8 days to go before the iPhone 3G gets announced, Optus is the first Aussie Telco to release comprehensive information on their iPhone pricing plans.
If you head on over to their iPhone page. You'll see a comprehensive breakdown of postpaid pricing data. The interesting thing is that the maximum amount of included data is 1GB. To be completely honest, this will be more than enough for most users, although we expect to hear a lot of grumbling from potential power users. The excess usage fee of 35 cents per MB does seem a bit steep.
There's a huge range of pricing structures that we'll go through in a bit more detail soon. In the meantime, head to Optus' iPhone page for more.

Changes don't seem to be live on the site yet.
That $19 cap is looking fairly tempting. Even the $49.
I don't see myself being a big user of the online component.

Where is this info coming from? There is no change on the Optus website that I can see and your links aren't working??? Is this for real??

I think the pricing structures are a bit strange in that on the higher plans the amount of cap you get for phone calls is ridiculously high!
Why wouldn't you offer two streams of plans with one more inclined to power users that are interested in data and the other for business users that will take advantage of an insane $1200 worth of calls cap!
Can't wait for Three to continue to push for the iPhone... at the moment they're offering 2GB of mobile broadband.

Good to see we are paying twice as much as the USA for the handset :(

What an absolute rip off, I was going to go with optus, but now I'm convinced that that would be the wrong move, better to get a reasonable plan from vodafone and hang on one of those data plans for $19 or $39 where excess costs are only 10c per mb. If no-one has a decent plan, I'm going to wait out till one appears, I suggest that other consumers who are also annoyed with the plans do the same. The providers will be sweating buckets if the take up is slow.

AS I EXPECTED!, nothing really special, just the same plan that optus currently offer, just with a little data thrown in.... "free" 16gb Black i phone here i come....

What a joke, whats the point of having things like youtube and exchange when you can only use those apps for about 5mins a day with those download limits.
Hopefully vodaphone has a bit more sense.
We are always getting ripped in Australia, its crazy!

I noticed on the age website they said you have the option to purchase outright for $729/849 (8/16GB) and then unlocked for $80. I think I'd do that and stick with my Virgin plan with $100 calls and 1gb of data for $45.
I'm not too sure about this unlocking for $80 though. it is nice the offer it though.

hmmm .. i don't know if i've got this completely wrong, but according to the hand set repayments on the Cap Plans, you're looking at paying Optus $588 on the cheapest plan, and that's not including the monthly fee's for the plan itself ...
Seems a little more than the US$199 "all round the world" price that Steve was going on about.

I wonder how hard it would be to write an app that cuts off our data at xxxx mb (user defined.) It could even give us updates at 50%, 75%, 90%, 95% etc.
At least then we wouldn't receive excess usage fees!
Who here knows cocoa?

The difference between most of the plans is actually fairly trivial: once you add the cost of the handset, the cost difference in the lower plans amounts to $5-$7 for each jump, instead of the advertised $10.

I might stay with Vodafone because international call is included with their cap.
Hopefully Vodafone has cheaper offer :(

That's not the interesting part. This is:
"Network Locking: Apple iPhone handsets are locked to the Optus network. An $80 fee applies if network locking is removed within the first 6 months from the activation date. Alternatively, if you recharge to the value of $80, no fee applies."
8GB Unlocked within six months = $729 + $80 = $809.
8GB Unlocked after six months = $729 (free unlocking)
16GB Unlocked within six months = $849 + $80 = $929.
16GB Unlocked after six months = $729 (free unlocking).
I plan to get the 16GB now. Pay $80 of prepaid credit. Use that up for the month, then switch to someone else, like Three :)

There's prepaid plans too.
8GB is about 700, 16GB is about 850.
Unlocking much?

What about handset pricing! damn you optus!

Optus site is in overload mode! Someone's uploaded all the data plans to www.iphoneinaustralia.com

Is it possible for you to post more info here? I'm having trouble accessing optus as well as several other websites at the moment... I have a mate 500kms away having the same problem. The internet's been broked!

And if they won't sell it outright - at least I can get the $19 contract then just terminate it straight away - even if there is a fee it can't be too bad then.
No pricing is up on their website yet though, which is a bit strange.

1GB Give me a break! ALL AT&T plans have Unlimited data and the top plan is 129.95/month for unlimited voice/data plus $20/month for unlimited SMS. Now you can say you are comparing 2 different markets, fair call but how do you justify I can get 5G of data from Virgin for $39/month.

I can't believe I'm saying it but Telstra sounds really attractive now with a promise of FREE WiFi hotspots.

Cam:
you do realise that Virgin is practically a rebranded Optus reseller, right? So I wouldn't expect the $45 deal that has $100 calls and 1gb data might work with an iphone...? as it would seriously undercut optus.

I'm going to throw my Three phone in the bin the moment I can get one!

as usual high costs and aussie consumer being ripped off by optus, as well as other Telcos mind you. What happened to US$199 you ask, not in Australia mate, we like to charge double for everything even when not required. I had the 1st iphone but may have to wait till the dust settles for the 3G rather than having to sell my left kidney to pay for it

What a rip off! Come'on Optus. Provide us with some REASONABLE data plans or pre-paid data for those who already have pre-paid accounts. That way people can have pre-paid voice calls - not the turbocharge crap where credit lasts for only 30 days - and post-paid data plans or pre-paid data plans. I was thinking $10 - $15 for 1GB.

This is awful. I am one of those "power users" and I WILL use more than 1Gb online. I am extremely unhappy that I cannot go over without being really stung. Optus! You are losing me and all my company phones, too. You needed to get some savvy marketing going on this - you could have been the best, but you've chosen to be "the rest"...
(Sigh) Telstra, offer me a 2 or 3 Gb plan and here I come.

Pretty much what I expected.. actually, slightly cheaper than expected..
Pity there's no $30 Plan, (it's a big jump between $20 and $50 plans) that's what I'm on now and it's about right for my usage.
Check out The Age or SMH.. they have direct links to the pricing pages..

Tells you everything, sadly the phone itself costs $19 at least a month on top of the plan itself...

Buried deep in the fine print is the cancellation costs. Read that part very very carefully before signing. It will cost you more than the cost of the iphone outright if you choose to cancel early.
for example:
If you are on an optus $59 cap plan over 24 months, and decide to cancel within the first 12 months, the cancellation fee is $840. $9 more and you could get a brand new 16gb iphone outright.
Seems ludicrous to me.

Hi guys,
I just got off the phone with Optus sale and was so mad !!!! I am in a contract with Optus for 24 months (12 months left) and paying $86 for call and the headset, not to say that I've been with them for 3 years.
The whole idea to call them at this stage is to make sure I had 1 Iphone to pick up at Optus shop which is close to my working place on the 11th without explaining the situation that I am in. And the Indian saleman told me "U will have to terminate our current contract and pay the cancellation fee - $550 and sign up a new plan to get IPHONE" even I tried to tell him that i've been paying bills ontime, loyal to Optus for that long and willing to extend my contract to 2 more years.
Well, OPTUS + APPLE = F&(*^*Heads, i will never sign anything with Optus again!!

ok this may sound really dumb...
if you buy the 16G for $849 and then pay another $80 to get it unlocked...do you just then put you other sim card in (my three sim) and then just keep going on the plan im on with three but using the iphone?
sorry for the stupid question, dont really understand what they mean by 'unlock' and what the does.
