Apple Store Sydney Opening: They're Still Clapping

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 10:06 AM on June 18, 2008
apple store 5.jpgRon Johnson is addressing the press, giving an overview of Apple Stores history. The Sydney store is the 215th store, first in the southern hemisphere. Apple Stores are now available in 6 countries, on 4 continents.

Half the Sydney store is dedicated to Apple owners, rather than just sales. Mac sales in Australia growing three times faster than PCs. The iPod is growing as well, so Sydney was the ideal place for their newest store.

Sydney is the second largest store in the world, and was designed to push all their products as close to the street as possible. The atrium area has the largest single sheets of laminated glass in the history of the world.

The store has 3 levels. The bottom level is dedicated to Macs, with over 90 Macs on display. There's also free Wi-Fi or internet access for anybody.

On level 1, there's all the other new products from Apple - iPods, Apple TV, and third party products to accompany your Mac purchase.

On the top level, there's the world's largest Genius Bar. It's over 20 metres long. There are areas dedicated to Pro Labs, workshops and one-on-one sessions. They have the capacity to offer 1000 training sessions each day.

There are over 125 employees at the Sydney Store. Like the rest of the Apple Stores, they're all colour-coded with a different selection of shirts: orange for concierge, blue for product specialists.

PC = Personal Computer.

Your post says "Mac sales in Australia growing three times faster than PCs"

So if PC is Personal Computer, is MAC then used only for work and not personal?

When will people get it, its not PC vs MAC but Windows Vs MAC. OS vs OS !

A MAC is a PC when will you people get this.

Hey Fred,

Even though it doesn't have quotation marks, that there was a quote from Ron Johnson from Apple.

@Nathan - no worries :) I'd be staring over my shoulder if I was carrying a MacBook Air as well...

Hey Nick,
Thanks for the comment.

Then Ron Johnson should look at Macs own site (below).
http://www.apple.com/getamac/

Why your next PC (Personal Computer) should be a MAC.

This is like saying "why your next PC should be Linux".

Then Ron should look at the below.
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2003/jun/23pmg5.html

Apple Unleashes the World’s Fastest Personal Computer—the Power Mac G5

google define:personal computer
- A small (desktop) microcomputer designed for use by a single user. As an acronym, 'PC,'

Or
define:PC
- In its more general usage, a PC (personal computer) is a computer designed for use by one person at a time

Apple site above says World’s Fastest Personal Computer—the Power Mac G5

So then apple are saying here that a the Mac G5 is a personal computer and there fore a the MAC G5 is a PC.
So how does that work when MAc adds have PC and MAC and then Ron says Mac sales in Australia growing three times faster than PCs.

If MAC is a PC as defined above then how can MAC be selling faster then PC when they are both the same things?
Apple site even says World’s Fastest PC — the Power Mac G5.

Apple had the balls to put on there MAC adds "Im Linux" but don’t have the balls to say Microsoft and have to say PC.
Why does RON just not say Mac sales in Australia growing three times faster than Windows systems or Other operating systems.

That’s my 2 cents.

Enjoy the rest of your day and thanks Gizmodo for allowing this post and keep up your good work.

If Microsoft and Linux combined already has approx 95% of the market sales, how are they supposed to grow in sales by 3x?, it is an unrealistic growth rate, while for macs who have I'm guessing 5%, it is easy to grow by 3x. The comparison is unfair and misleading by apple.

PC is so ubiquitous it's become a colloquial term that has its own variety of meanings.

That's the benefit of English. The meaning of the word is determined by its regular use, not just on what it says in a dictionary.

They don't say Windows or Linux, instead of PC, because they are also trying to cripple the hardware manufacturers. Apple make software and hardware and Dell or HP are one of Apple's biggest competitors, on a similar level to Microsoft.

love the stat ... "growing 3 times faster". if I sold 200 of something last month and then 290 this month that's a 45% increase.
Another guy sells 200,000 of something this month then 230,000 next month that's only an increase of 15%. Forget that the 2nd guy sold 229,710 more units then I did, I increased sales x 3 fold. lol

There is a saying "Never BS a BS'er" and considering aussies are pretty good BS'ers I reckon Apple should pay us a little more credibility than to throw around a stat like that.

Regardless of how you see it, the majority of the world refers to macs as macs and any other OS as a PC, this has made it easy for everyone to understand and collectively group linux and windows, and separate it from the mac =) especially at press conferences it would be quite frustrating to constantly keep saying, thats why macs are better than windows, linux and other OS, where he can simply say PC. When they refer to a 'why your next PC should be a mac' is probably trying to draw the attention of the consumer from a PC to a mac and demonstrating that its one and same (but of course better) and ...anyone can find a definition of a PC on google. Im just amused by how you seem to want to complicate the matter, we all understand the logic. i doubt posting on this forum will change the outcome

Awesome pics Nick, hopefully got myself a gig at one of the other stores opening up soon =)
