Posted by Nick Broughall at 9:38 AM on May 29, 2008
Alongside the Blu-ray recorder Panasonic unleashed yesterday, there were 14 new Viera TVs. That's right. Fourteen. That number includes nine plasmas - including a new 46-inch model - and five new LCDs. 11 of these new sets will be available in time for the Olympics.
Six of the nine plasmas are Full HD, offering 1080p pictures, 24p cinema mode, 100Hz technology, 134 billion viewable colours and 30,000:1 native contrast ratio.
Panasonic have reiterated their position that plasmas are better for bigger screen sizes, while LCD TVs are perfect for smaller sizes and brightly lit rooms.
In the LCD department, sizes range from 32-inch to 37-inch, with Full HD models available in both sizes.

VIERA Plasma 2008:
Outstanding picture quality and connectivity
Sydney, 28 May 2008 - Panasonic's 2008 VIERA Plasma line-up of nine new
models includes the PZ850 and PZ800 Series of Full High Definition (FHD) TVs, and
the PX80 and PX8 Series of High Definition (HD) TVs.
All models feature the company's latest Plasma panel and 'black box' processor and
driver technologies developed in Japan and designed to ensure a magnificent picture.
Paul Reid, Director, Consumer Electronics Group, Panasonic Australia, said: "Year
after year, Panasonic has delivered innovative picture-improving technologies to flat
panels and 2008's increased line-up continues that trend. With the digital switchover
on the horizon and an increased awareness of high definition, consumers now
demand blacker blacks, faster response time and the billions of colours that VIERA
Plasma TVs deliver.
"The Plasma TV market is booming, with 33 per cent growth overall in our last
financial year, and Panasonic achieved almost double this with 65 per cent growth in
Plasma demand over the same period."i
Panasonic's continuing commitment to Plasma technology is evidenced in the
construction of the company's fifth Plasma panel factory in Amagasaki, Japan.
Expected to be completed in 2009, the new factory will have a production capacity of
1 million panels a month, giving Panasonic the world's largest Plasma manufacturing
capacity.
Paul Reid added: "A VIERA Plasma television boasts vivid colours, rich blacks and
exceptional clarity during high-speed action. So if you can't make it to Beijing, you
can see all the action and excitement of the Games on a VIERA HDTV."
VIERA represents industry-leading picture quality, and the new range is no exception.
Panasonic's Full HD VIERA Plasma TVs offer outstanding images, delivering 5,120
equivalent steps of gradation, 134 billion viewable colours, a maximum 1,000,000:1ii
dynamic contrast ratio and precise moving picture reproduction.
Across the range, all models feature integrated High Definition Digital Tuners, and
the TVs incorporate 100Hz double scan technology to reproduce flicker-free, smooth
motion. A new anti-reflective filter on the front of the TVs provides the viewer with
clear, crisp images.
Powerful connectivity is available throughout the VIERA range, with VIERA Link,
HDMI input, SD Card slotiii, and PC input. For outstanding sound, the PZ850 Series
features four speakers and SRS TruSurround XT, and all models offer two full-range
speakers and 20W audio output.
The new Plasma range includes Panasonic's new protective sheet of toughened
glass which can withstand up to 4 joules of impact, ideal for the active loungeroom
and also easy to clean. The PZ850 Series 50-inch FHD and PZ800 Series models
also offer a convenient swivel stand.
Panasonic's manufacturing process ensures that all VIERA Plasma TVs are lead and
mercury free. This reduces the impact on the environment when recycling or
disposing of the products in the future.
The range also has a long lifespan of 100,000 hours or more than 30 years if used
eight hours a day, seven days a week. This is achieved by an enhanced phosphor
processing method and other unique Panasonic technologies. Panasonic also
continues to focus on ensuring more efficient use of energy with each generation of
its Plasma range, with enhancements across panel, driver and power supply.
The new Plasma range, all with the industry's HD Tick certification, includes:

Panasonic VIERA Picture Quality
The new PZ850 and PZ800 Full HD models offer industry-leading picture quality, with
key features including:
• Full HD 1920 x 1080p panel
• 1080p digital processing chipset
• 1080p digital re-mastering processor
• 5,120 equivalent steps of gradation
• 134 billion viewable colours
• 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (30,000:1 native)
• 100Hz Double Scan technology
• Intelligent Frame Creation
• 24p Real Cinema
• 3D Colour Management
• Sub-Pixel Controller
• x.v colour
• Deep Colour (PZ850 Series)
• Digital Cinema Colour (PZ850 Series)
Panasonic's new Full HD models incorporate the company's 1080p digital processing
chipset, which processes high-resolution video signals in their native 1920 x 1080
progressive format without down-conversion. The 1080p digital re-mastering
processor converts ordinary SD broadcasts and DVD video signals into highresolution
1080p signals to render crisp images and optimise them for large-screen
viewing.
A high-performance driver optimises panel performance. The resulting images show
every motion clearly and express each step of gradation in delicate detail. In turn,
the Full HD panel ensures highly detailed images and a virtually instantaneous
0.001-msec response time for motion image reproduction that surpasses any other
flat panel technology.
The TVs offer outstanding picture quality, with 134 billion viewable colours and a
maximum 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. 5,120 equivalent steps of gradation
ensures smooth images and accurately depicts even the finest shades of colour in a
sunset.
100Hz double scan technology reproduces flicker-free, smooth motion. In addition,
Intelligent frame creation ensures high motion picture resolution and smooth and
natural frame-to-frame transition even in fast-moving scenes. This is achieved by
creating and inserting new frames by calculating speed and direction of motion.
These models are designed for superior colour from all sources, and in particular,
Blu-Ray Disc™ movies, through compatibility with the x.viv Colour standard. This
standard enables HDTVs to display colours more precisely, expressing spatial depth
and texture with a high level of accuracy.
The PZ850 Series also supports the Deep Colour (HDMI V1.3 standard), which
eliminates on-screen colour banding, for vividness and accuracy. In addition, 'Digital
Cinema Colour' picture tuning by Panasonic Hollywood Laboratories ensures
outstanding movie viewing. 24p input optimises playback from Blu-ray discs, so you
see movies the way the director intended.
The PX80 and PX8 Series of High Definitionv Plasma TVs offer affordable, highquality
viewing in the loungeroom, with 68 billion viewable colours and a maximum
1,000,000:1vi dynamic contrast ratio.
They share core VIERA picture technologies with the Full HD range. Advanced 3D
Colour Management enriches colour depth to make images more expressive and
appealing to the human eye. The Sub-Pixel Controller minimises jagged or blurred
diagonal lines for smoother edges and contours. This advanced system processes
red, green and blue colours separately for crisper, more natural looking images.
100Hz double scan technology is also incorporated.

Panasonic releases industry-leading VIERA LCD range
Sydney, 28 May 2008 - Panasonic has released its biggest LCD TV line-up yet, with
five new models including the LZD850 and LZD800 Series of Full High Definition
(FHD) 1080p TVs and the LXD80 Series of High Definition TVs.
Paul Reid, Director, Consumer Electronics Group, Panasonic Australia, said: "These
are Panasonic's first Full HD LCD TVs, with a new 37-inch screen size and a 32-inch
model both available in FHD."
"Continuing our reputation of excellent picture quality, our Full HD LCD TVs offer
100Hz Motion Picture Pro 2 technology for sharp, clear reproduction of fast-moving
scenes. They also have a wide 178° viewing angle with the IPS (In-Plane Switching)
Alpha LCD panel."
Paul Reid added: "We have always believed that the choice of TV technologies is
application based - how and when you will be watching the TV. In a bright
environment and in smaller screen sizes, LCD is the ideal solution. We believe the
IPS Alpha panel offers leading LCD picture quality."
"Globally, our investment in the IPS Alpha LCD Panel Business Alliance is growing,
with construction on a new IPS Alpha LCD panel plant to begin in August 2008, with
the plant operational in January 2010."
The range is designed in stylish black, co-ordinating with Panasonic's entire 2008
Home Entertainment line-up. The LZD850 and LZD800 Series offer a convenient
swivel stand.
The new LCD range, all with the industry's HD Tick certification, is:

VIERA Picture Quality
The LZD850, LZD800 and LXD80 Series VIERA LCD models offer a wide 178°
viewing angle with the IPS (In-Plane Switching) Alpha LCD panel. In addition, the
backlight's wide transmission aperture enhances the contrast between light and dark
and improves motion image response.
Panasonic's LZD850 and LZD800 Series Full HD LCD TVs combine a high dynamic
contrast ratio of 10,000:1 with Panasonic's Intelligent Scene Controller (ISC) to
reproduce deep, rich blacks. Black levels are improved and deepened by expanding
the backlight tuning area. The ISC adjusts the LCD backlight to produce optimal
picture quality.
These Full HD models also incorporate 100Hz Motion Picture Pro 2, which ensures
that fast-moving scenes in sports and action movies are displayed sharply and
clearly, and has been enhanced with the new range to offer Motion Focus
Technology.
Motion Picture Pro 2 creates 100 frames/1sec from 50 frames/1 sec. This increases
the frame count to allow natural frame-to-frame transitions, which results in smooth
motion images with high resolution. The VIERA LCD also enhances resolution by
detecting areas with motion and optimising the backlight for those areas. In addition,
Motion Focus Technology makes items like scrolling text appear sharper and clearer.
At the top of the range, the TX-37LZD850A offers amazing visual impact with
Panasonic's first Clear Panel LCD, which ensures sharper, crisper-looking images.
