This past weekend, hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated in anticipation of a potential spillway failure at the Oroville dam in the US. Images from space show what the area in northern California looked like during last year's drought, and how it appeared after a spate of intense rain, at the height of the recent breach scare.

At least 188,000 residents in the areas surrounding the Oroville Dam in Northern California have had to evacuate their homes as workers scramble to prevent a potentially catastrophic breach. Now, reports are surfacing indicating local officials were warned about safety issues with the Oroville Dam 12 years ago, and did little to mitigate them.
"This NOT A Drill," the Butte County Sheriff's Department wrote on Facebook Sunday afternoon, urging residents of Oroville, California to evacuate immediately. "Officials are anticipating a failure of the Auxiliary Spillway at Oroville Dam within the next 60 minutes," wrote the California Department of Water Resources on Sunday night at around 5PM PST.
